Day one

Hi, I've been cutting out sugar for the past 10 weeks, but only weighed myself today the first time in over a year. Due to acute long term persistent pain, exercise is hard. I've been walking the dog twice a day for 20/30 minutes, and this is day three of cycling 3 miles. I need to lose about 1 to 2 stone, and my goal is my nieces wedding in January. Today my calorie intake has been about 1000, but we have a meal out planned tomorrow and are going away on the weekend.

Welcome to our friendly forum Fattytaffy,

What a great incentive to loose weight.

Well done for cutting out the sugar. Had you lost some weight when you got on the scales? How about joining in with the Monday Mass Movers weigh in today. It is open until 10pm tonight. All the information you need to find it is in the following newbie letter.

I notice that you say you have only had 1000 calories today. Is this just because you are eating out and going to be away, or do you always eat that low? We would suggest you check your personal calorie range on the NHS BMI calculator and start at the higher end of your range.

To make navigating the forum easier, we've put all the information you'll need in a newbie pack and here's the link

Hi for my height and weight it says my daily intake should be between 1750 and 2250. Since cutting out sugar I've not really eaten between meals, eat a lot of fruit and veg and drink only two cups of milky weak coffee a day. I try to drink a lot of water. If I'm hungry mid afternoon I'll have some cheese and Apple. I restrict myself to two slices of wholemeal bread, but I do like to have butter with it. I've always had low energy, which is part of my pain condition, but had thought that I would have had more energy over the last two months. I also have a hormone imbalance causing an early menopause when I was in my 20s. Am I not eating enough! I can add nuts into my daily allowance. I don't drink alcohol and I don't smoke. Sorry for bombarding you with questions

I'd support lucigret's advice, maybe aim for around 2000 calories at present - you'll reduce that as you lose weight. You've done yourself a favour by cutting out eating between meals, so you'll need to aim for approx 650 cals per meal, leaving you with some for milk in drinks.

I hope rebalancing your diet will help increase your energy, but I'm sure your pain condition must be difficult to deal with. See what you think about the information lucigret has given you in her second reply: it may give you a different slant on healthy eating which could serve you well :)

Start at the higher end of your calorie range. Be careful with white carbs, such as bread, rice, pasta and potato, cutting these down or out may help with your energy and including good fats, such as olive oil, butter, avocado and yes nuts etc should also help.

Make sure you are eating enough to stop your body thinking it is being starved.

Thanks...lots of advice to take in.

Tonight we are celebrating my son's exam results and he has chosen a Chinese Buffet...help!! What are the best things to eat. J will avoid rice and chips, All vegetables etc are in sauces. I eat a lot of chicken, but there it will be in batter or sauce. I've not eaten much today to compensate and am not feeling hungry. I've also managed an hour's walk. I want to enjoy myself.

Commercial chinese food may not be the healthiest but it is only for one meal, so just enjoy your son's celebration and don't worry too much about the food. In your shoes I'd go for the vegetables and a little plain rice if you need it.

Thanks. I had a prawn salad and then mushrooms and chicken. Melon and grapes and two tiny pieces of chocolate. Washed down with tap water. Didn't feel as if I'd overdone it, but had a great time out
