Hi 🙋 What is TDEE, do I need to understand this?
Interested to read your blog, I'm 5' 6", aged 55 and 15stone 5lbs. Hate my shape, lack of energy, horrendous sleep routine (often awake 2am - 6am) bloody hormones! Fat/50's/flippin fed up and unfit = feel like poo. My clothes don't fit any more and I don't feel sexy at all - what can I do?
Hi there Hidden - you do sound fed up! Are you ready to slowly start a diet plan? Maybe start by watching calories or just healthy eating? Maybe go for nice long walks if you can? Look at the daily diaries, weekly weigh ins etc I’m 58, been dieting most of my life but never give up. I enjoy healthy eating & excercise, although not totally fit myself 😀 I do try. Try a new name for yourself 55readytomoveonandgetfit (or something like that? Come on you can do this! Let me know how you get on .... lots of friendly people on here. I’m on hols at mo & overindulging at mo, swollen ankles & not exactly bikini body ha ha but walking loads and will get back on plan ASAP when home. I do enjoy fish a lot too so that helps . Good luck your soon been 55&feelingfabulous! 😉
Bless you thanks for the encouragement. My husband and I do a fair bit of walking (strolling?) perhaps we need to up it a bit or I need to walk at pace on my own? We do eat healthy fruit/veg/fish but, too many calories taken in to expenditure? I guess that's the simple maths. But do find weight harder to shift in 50's, more effort needed and motivation. Perhaps I don't want it badly enough, in denial me thinks? 😉
Ah ok, sleeping less in routine might work better than tossing and turning for hours? I'll try that approach. Hope to increase activity, modify food intake and lose weight. Watch this space.......
Good morning 55 and welcome to our friendly forum,

The most important thing to do is use the BMI calculator and find your own personal calorie range and start somewhere near the top end.
Any questions, come back and ask - no question is too silly.
Welcome Hidden You're obviously upset with yourself right now but you've taken an important step in taking back control of your life.
TDEE is a measurement of the number of cals your body burns in an average day (Total Daily Energy Expenditure). Each person has a specific TDEE depending on height, weight, age and sex.
Different calculators work it out in different ways. Some will provide you with a TDEE based on the fact that you don't move at all during the day then you have to work out how much exercise you do and add that onto your TDEE.
Other such as the the NHS BMI calculator take into account your average level of activity...
This calculator will provide you with a range of cals to adhere to that will allow you to lose weight at a sensible level that you can maintain over time.
Many of us here follow the NHS 12 week plan in conjunction with that calorie range...
Hi, your TDEE is your Total Daily Energy Expenditure, which is a sum of 1.your Basal Metabolic rate or BMR ( the calories you body uses just to keep you alive even if you laid in bed all day), 2.your Non Exercise Activity Thermogenesis or NEAT ( the calories you use in your daily life which can vary widely depending on how generally active you are) and 3. Calories burned doing planned exercise . The TDEE is total calories burned in a given day depending on what you did that day.
Some people like calculating their calories in and out to that level as it provides a structure and focus. It would drive me doolally as I'm not a fan of maths!
If you go to the NHS BMI calculator and put in the details it asks for it will give you a calorie range to eat which will allow you to lose weight at a steady rate based on your approximate activity levels, and for the majority of people this will be accurate enough for them to lose weight if they stick to it.
Good luck 😀

But if we dont take charge of ourselves, nothing will change.
