Trying to hold a line until January

It's time to start yet another diet. I've yo-yo'd my weight for much of my life. I dropped over 7 stones 5-6 years ago, but have gained a couple back and need to lose them (again). I realize that it's kind of foolish to start in December, but I'm trying to not gain any more weight this month, then start losing more regularly in January.

I get reasonable exercise (I cycle almost daily, also do some hiking and I walk the golf course once or twice a week). But I'll just sit and graze on 'boredom food' in front of the TV, and can chunk down literally thousands of calories like that. Sleep will be my biggest challenge. I'm a poor sleeper anyway, and usually sleep very poorly when I'm hungry.

I seem to do this weight loss thing better in a group/forum/challenge setting, and am hoping that maybe somebody out there has some ideas on how I can feel less hungry at night which might help me sleep more than 3-4 hours.

A very warm welcome YetAnotherDiet . I think you'll fined that most of us on this forum have been yo yo dieters in the past, but joining this forum will hopefully mean that's a thing of the past for you now. You'll find so much encouragement and support from the lovely members here. One of our administrators will be along shortly with a link to all you need to know to get the best out it.

As for feeling hungry in the evenings I've found that eating enough calories during the day keeps me satiated. You'll be guided to the NHS bmi calculator which will give a range of calories suited to your needs and eating at the higher range is recommended. We have been brainwashed by the diet industry to believe we have to eat fewer calories in order to lose weight but honestly that is not the case.

Very best of luck. The more active you are on the forum the more you'll get out of it. Of all the links you'll receive I highly recommend taking part in the Daily Diary. This will help you to keep to your plan and you'll get loads of interesting ideas for healthy meals

Hi and welcome, Yad :)

I'm not using your full name, as this is not going to be another diet, this is going to be your fist step on the road to a healthy lifestyle.

I'd like to invite you to join our Newbie Club, which we hope will be a good place for you to connect with members, who are also just starting out. If you just post a few words to introduce yourself and respond to others there, you'll soon break the ice. Here's the link

I find sugar-free sweets last thing at night on the bedside table really handy for soothing hunger before sleep. No tooth decay either .Aldi do a smashing variety in their 'Dominion' range. Be careful though -they can be very 'moving ' -and not in an emotional way !

I bicycle for exercise - usually 3000-4000k per year, but sometimes more. I'd love to find a cycling group here.
