I always think it's best to look at exercise as a way to tone your body, get healthy and feel good, but not as a weight loss tool, because that will be more about what you eat.
I would suggest a mixture of cardio and strength and expect that there will be experts at the gym to guide you.

I’m with moreless. Losing weight has more to do with eating less than moving more, although of course exercise is so good for us mentally and physically.
Moreless is spot on. Don't try to use the gym to compensate for poor food choices. Use the gym to help tone up and ensure that you maintain your muscle mass. A mix of cardio and strength is required. Good luck with it.
