Welcome 60ish

There are people on the forum who have experience of knee and hip replacements who you will no doubt get to know.

This is an amazing forum to be part of. Many of people on here have different areas of concern but we are all trying to get to, or maintain, our desired weight. As you get to know us, and share experiences with us, you will find what a super supportive bunch we are, and that we don't pass judgements.

Here are a few suggestions about how to get the most out of the forum.

The first place to look is at the Pinned Posts section to the right of your screen (bottom if you're using a mobile), read the Welcome Newbie thread first and move through to the challenges, where we hope you'll find at least one that will appeal to you.

Move down to the Topics, to find a variety of threads, collated into topics for ease of access and we ask that you also 'file' your own threads, so that others won't miss your important news; and you will have important news to share with us.

Have a look at the NHS 12-week plan; many people have had success with it. Also use the BMI checker to find your target calories, it's important to eat enough. This can be a major turning point, realising you can eat anything as long as the calories are accounted for and are within your personal limit.

Don't forget to take your starting measurements and a 'before' picture, as they can be very motivating on days that the scales refuse to co-operate; that happens to me quite regularly!

The forum also has group weigh-ins every day, just choose which day you wish to weigh, join the post for that day and weigh in once per week. The Daily Diary is a very useful thread where we post our planned menu for the day, including calories if you count them, any exercise you have planned and any tips that you can share. The posts can always be found in the Events section on the 'home' page.

If you just want to chat, to say hello, or share any news or struggles then look out for the What's Happening Today thread. There are many other challenges to get involved with, just choose to do what you are comfortable with and feel free to join as many, or as few as you wish.

The grey box next to people's names are achievement badges, and as a new member of the community you have a 'Newbie' badge. We've found that to get the best out of this community, you need to be active on the forum, as it's where we exchange information, get motivation and inspiration, and make friends. We hope that you'll join us here regularly.

If you are using the new HU App on your mobile phone (helpful for when you are out and about), many of features mentioned are not available; use the full website version to maximise your experience.

If you have any questions please just ask. The more you join in and connect with people the more you get out of the forum.

I wish you well as you get started with a new lifestyle.

Welcome 60ish. This is great place to learn how to lose weigh safely and sensibly. Read the daily diaries to get lots of ideas and join in too. Comment and share to get the most out of the forum. Good luck in your first week.

Thanks for your encouragement. I need to lose at least 2stone asap so that I can have a replacement knee op early next year. Exercise is difficult so assume weight loss will be slower than I would like. However I am feeling positive.

You can lose weight without exercise. Just check your BMI on NHS website and it will give you a calorie range. Don't go too near the bottom as you need to eat enough. As you lose weight, you may feel that you can do some exercise. 2 cans of beans whilst watching tv to tone your arms etc

Hi, I was in your position early last year 2017, could hardly walk with severe arthritis in my right knee and therefore my weight went up due to inactivity. I had my knee op in March 2017 and must say the operation itself is ok, I had an epidural. I then put on about 1 stonne in the next month although I did all the excersises you are not able to get about at all. But now to the good news, after about three months I was back driving and taking shorter than normal for me walks with my dog. But now 12 months on I am nearly back to my desired weight and walking my dog about 2-3 hours a day and also doing aqua fit classes three times a week. So the message from this is "hang on in there" it will all be good in the end and I now have my life back so it was worth going through the trauma of having a operation. GOOD LUCK XX

Thanks. Feeling really positive and already received many wishes of support. This time I'll achieve it.

You can do it. Just take small steps and set 7lb goals. Before you know it you will start losing and be on your way. It's mostly diet so you may need to concentrate on that first. Make good choices and use portion control. We'll be here for you and you'll get your knee fixed in no time.

Thanks for your encouragement. I know this time I can do it. I always said if my weight affected my health I would be strong. Well here it is!!!!!!

Hi and welcome and good luck on your weight loss journey towards that knee op

Thanks. The knee op should be reason enough to lose weight. Feeling positive.

Good luck, you can lose weight just by eating healthier, I'm disabled so I'm relying on diet rather than exercise. This evening will be my week 12 weigh in at my slimming group and I'm really hoping to get my 2 stone award... keeping my fingers crossed - or at least I would if I could! 😂

Good luck for today's weighin. I am in a good place mentally to lose weight as I am desperate for this knee replacement. I've done so many diets over the years so let's hope that I can change habits of a lifetime. Now I have a real reason to reach my goal.
