Hi and welcome, Suzie :)

Take a look at the Pinned posts section to the right of your screen (bottom if you're using a mobile), or in the drop down on the 'Posts' page (it says 'arrange by'). Read the Welcome Newbie thread, then move through to the challenges, where we hope you'll find at least one that will appeal to you.

Move down to the Topics, to find a variety of threads, collated into specific topics for ease of access and we ask that you also 'file' your own threads, so that others won't miss your important news.

Take a look at the NHS 12 week plan, as a lot of people have been successful with it, making sure to enter your details into the NHS BMI calculator, to get a calorie allowance tailored to your personal requirements. Don't forget to take your starting measurements and a 'before' picture, as they can be very motivating on days that the scales refuse to co-operate.

To the right of the HOME page (bottom on a mobile), you'll find Events. In there, you'll find links to our daily Weigh-in's (you will choose just one day per week), our Daily Diary, where we post our menu and exercise plans, for accountability, advice and support and our “What's happening today” thread, where we pop in for a chat.

Be aware, that the HU app doesn't give you access to all of our important features, so we advise that you use the full website page.

We've found that to get the best out of this community, we need to be active on the forum, as it's where we exchange information, get motivation and inspiration and make friends. We hope that you'll join us here, regularly, too.

It's only left for me to wish you well on your journey :)

Welcome Susie54 !

I empathise! My Hubbie is 5ft 9" but I am only 4ft 9", but used to eat the same quantities as he did.

One of the greatest eye openers for me was logging and weighing the food I was eating. I soon came to understand why I was overweight! Overtime, both of us have completely changed how much we eat...

Alcohol.... hmmmmm. I found that too many alcohol fuelled binges were causing too much damage. I cut drinking out more or less totally and now (sadly) gone totally off the taste of wine... I think it's a hormonal thing as well. Find it quite sad as I am half French and used to love a glass of red or white wine with a meal!

Alcohol is of course massively calorific. I can only have 1100 calories a day for continued weight loss as I am now close to goal. Calories need to be used wisely! Even with two healthy meals a day and no "treats" it's quite hard to remain within my calorie allowance 🙁

I think the 1,400 cal intake for women is prob a bit generous for me too .. my FitBit output & input also prob has a lot to answer for x it's only my 1st week so let's see what Sat weigh in reveals..!!

It takes a little while to work out how many calories to achieve the rate of loss that you want, but the body and the way it works is a complex bit of machinery! We all need to find what works for us - AND of course, the allowance has to reduce the more successful we are plus (sadly) with age. The older we are, the less calories our body needs to function!

When I first started on my weight loss journey, weighing 14 stone, I could eat 1500 calories... but that dropped with each stone I lost and each year I grew older :D

Good luck. We'll be here for you.

Hi Susie54 do make sure you have even been eating enough calories in general. Add up the amount of calories roughly you tend to have daily including drinks because when I did this I found I was only eating around 1000cals instead 2000. This was because I always thought eating less straight away would mean I would lose weight faster. It doesn't work like this though so you should also check out your details on the NHS bmi calculator as this gives you personal amounts rather that average that are the same for most. It gives you two amounts you should eat between to be able to lose weight and I would eat the higher amount so you don't end up on too low amounts eventually when you are closer to the right bmi. Also, the other reason I would do this is because if you don't eat enough calories your body thinks you are starving it and turns what you do eat into body fat and this weighs more than eating the extra calories does so it stops you from losing weight and sometimes puts weight on instead. Please don't make this same mistake and good luck with your journey.
