Hello Tricia24 and welcome to the Weight Loss Forum
Here are a few suggestions on how to get the most out of the forum. Please note if you are using the new HU App many of these features are not available so I suggest you use the full website version.
The first place to look is at the Pinned posts section to the right of your screen (bottom if you're using a mobile), read the Welcome Newbie thread first and move through to the challenges, where we hope you'll find at least one that will appeal to you. Move down to the Topics, to find a variety of threads, collated into specific topics for ease of access and we ask that you also 'file' your own threads, so that others won't miss your important news
Have a look at the NHS 12 week plan, as many people have had success with it. Also use the BMI checker to find your target calories, it's important to eat enough. This was a major turning point for me, realising I could eat anything I wanted as long as the calories are accounted for. Don't forget to take your starting measurements and a 'before' picture, as they can be very motivating on days that the scales refuse to co-operate
The forum also have group weigh-ins every day, as well as a new Daily Diary, if you wish to take part. The posts can always be found in the Events section on the 'home' page. And if you just want to chat, to say hello or share any news or struggles then look out for What's Happening Today thread.
You'll notice a grey box next to people's names, these are achievement badges, and as a new member you have a 'Newbie' badge. We've found that to get the best out of this community, we need to be active on the forum, as it's where we exchange information, get motivation and inspiration and make friends. We hope that you'll join us here, regularly, too. If you have any questions please just ask
Best wishes
Anna
Good morning I have just got back from the Drs she has said to me my weight loss will have to wait until they sort my back problem out I am struggling to walk had foot reconstruction last August had breast cancer February this year had operation and radiotherapy so my body been through the mill have pain in my back going down my bottom so struggling to do any form of exercise I walk with crutches and I'm stiff all over I am still trying to lose weight I'm in catch 22. I am a happy person not usually a moaner so sorry for moaning xx
Do you know why your doctor told you your weight loss will have to wait. If this is because of exercise, it is not that much of a problem as not everybody here does exercise to lose weight. Also do you actually count your calories. If you don't do check this up on the NHS bmi calculator as this tells you good amounts to have to lose weight with and you should eat somewhere in between these amounts. If I was you I would pick nearer the higher amount as this amount does drop as you lose weight. I never used to eat enough calories when I first joined and I was struggling to lose weight properly. I was advised this information on here, If you don't eat enough your body thinks that your starving it and turns what you do eat into body fat and this weighs more than eating the extra calories does. It also stops you from losing weight and sometimes puts weight on instead. When I upped my calories I started losing weight and have now managed to lose just over 2st. Hope this information helps you. Good luck with your journey.
I really don't understand calories at all and yes it is regarding exercise I don't know how to work them out I do most of my cooking from scratch I haven't a clue how to work them out I've been emobile for a year and my weight has rocketed I'm getting really down about it. X
Tricia a good tool for calorie counting I have found is the 'My Fitness Pal' app on your phone/tablet. You can enter your own recipes and it'll tell you how many calories is in a portion. You can also use your camera to scan barcodes of foods and it will tell you all the info you need about it. Its a good way of keeping a diary of what you eat etc while keeping track of your weightloss journey and exercise
With calorie counting the mfp is great as advised by Shellington also I can tell you how to count calories as I was advised how to do this. It is on here somewhere as well you just need to put how to calorie count in the question and you will get a few answers. An example to go by is
To work out calories of a slice of cheese you have weighed :
(1) Divide the weight of the slice of cheese in grams by 100
(2) Multipy (times) the result of (1) by the number of calories (kcal) per 100g that is given on your cheeses nutritional information
So for example, say your slice weighs in at 21grams and your cheese has 365 kcal per 100g:
21 divided 100 =0.21 grams
0.21 times 265 = 76.65 calories
Hope this helps you with the calorie counting for items you do still have to do this for.
