I'm a man who has had a weight problem for 30 years. I'm a serial Yo Yo dieter. I've tried most diets in my time and lost weight on all of them only to regain all of my weight plus one I hit target. I've joined and left Slimming World and Weight Watchers many times. I've lost stones on Cambridge plan and regained everything.
The problem I have with group support is that I don't feel supported. I find as a man that I'm always told that it's easier to lose weight. I've even had consultants make really sexist remarks which I find demeaning and just make me lose focus.
I need to adopt a healthier lifestyle and developed a plan for life.
I'm 57 years old and really need to make changes now.
Sorry for moaning but I'm not feeling great just now and really need some support.
Neal.

I think you'll find that the majority of us here have been serial yoyo dieters and members of various slimming clubs and have finally found salvation here
Take a look at the Pinned posts section to the right of your screen (bottom if you're using a mobile), or in the drop down on the 'Posts' page (it says 'arrange by'). Read the Welcome Newbie thread, then move through to the challenges, where we hope you'll find at least one that will appeal to you.
Move down to the Topics, to find a variety of threads, collated into specific topics for ease of access and we ask that you also 'file' your own threads, so that others won't miss your important news.
Take a look at the NHS 12 week plan, as a lot of people have been successful with it, making sure to enter your details into the BMI calculator, to get a calorie allowance tailored to your personal requirements. Don't forget to take your starting measurements and a 'before' picture, as they can be very motivating on days that the scales refuse to co-operate.
We run a weigh-in every day of the week and you'd be very welcome to join one of them. The threads can always be found in the Events section, to the right of the HOME page, bottom on a mobile.
We also run a Daily Diary, where we share our meal and exercise plans for the day. It's a great place to get ideas and to keep us focused. The link can also be found in Events.
Be aware, that the HU app doesn't give you access to all of our important features, so we advise that you use the full website page.
We've found that to get the best out of this community, we need to be active on the forum, as it's where we exchange information, get motivation and inspiration and make friends. We hope that you'll join us here, regularly, too.
It's only left for me to wish you well on your journey
Hi Debris59 im new too and just wanted to say welcome.
I can sense your despondency in your post. Until I joined I would look at myself and think 'you're a state, a mess' then the 'good voice' would pipe up and say 'you'll stay like that unless you do something about it'
I wrote down what was good about how I looked and more importantly how I felt about being overweight. Top of the list was 'I could carry on eating and drinking all the rubbish that seems so delicious' Then I wrote down all the good things about losing weight and the list was endless- live longer ( I have a young son and I'm an old mum), reduce the risk of getting illnesses, save money ( its true, it costs a fortune eating so much!), my joints would improve meaning I could walk/run/cycle and join communities with those common interests, I'd look better and fit into my old beautiful clothes, my self esteem would improve massively and I may even get myself a job, my confidence would return. And with all that I'd simply just be a happier person with less worries.
I can't advise you what to do but you have my support Neal. And there are some men in these groups who will be able to relate and support you too.
I hope you stick with us in the forums. Good luck and keep posting.
Hello Debris59 and welcome. At 57 you still have a great deal of life left to live and you want that to be the best life it can be don't you?
Firstly, forget about what has happened in the past, think of this not as a new diet but as a complete rethink of how you live your life. You will need to focus on eating smaller portions of healthy, fresh, nutritious food, wean yourself off bad habits so that it will become second nature to choose the healthier options. Reduce your alcohol intake if poss as these are just wasted calories and not good for your health. Instead drink lots of water, before and between meals, 2 litres would be perfect. Add sliced lemon if that makes it more palatable.
Look at the NHS BMI checker to see what your calorie intake should be. Start at the higher end of the range and then you can work towards the lower end as you lose pounds. Even when you reach your target weight you need to keep up this new lifestyle but hopefully by then you won't even have to think about it as it will be second nature.
Hello, I'm a newbie too. I've done all the diets and my weight has been up and down for years. I'm hoping with the support here and my new thinking of taking a day at a time I can do it and you can too!
Welcome to the forum. You will get so much support from all of the people on here. Most of us have ' been there, done that and got the t-shirt' for yo-yo dieting.
Make sure that you don't reduce your calories too much as I have lost over half a stone by eating more. I was eating less than half the recommended calories ( NHS BMI calculator). I actually put weight on eating less than 1000 calories a day!!! My body had gone into starvation mode and stored every calorie that I did have. I upped to about 1600-1700 a day and I lost 1.5lb in the 1st week .
