55 and fed up !!!!

Barnes55 profile image
18 Replies

I have battled weight issues for most of my life.

I lost weight before for my Sons wedding 5 years ago but have put it all back on when my best friend that was also my weight loss buddy died from brain cancer.

Sinice then I have had depression and more recently have lacked the drive to start all over again.

This is the first step as I cannot carry on like this I am back to a size 18 and need to lose at least 3 -4 stone to get back to where I was.

Any comments or tips would be very welcome as it seems a scary prospect at the moment.

Good morning Barnes55 😊

Welcome to the Weight Loss NHS forum. It’s great that you’ve joined. We are a friendly bunch! 😊

First place to look is at the Pinned Posts section, to the right of your screen (bottom, if you're using a mobile) and have a look at the Welcome Newbies thread.😊 there is lots of info here, and links to the nhs12 week plan and also for checking your BMR and target calories although I know you probably have lots of knowledge about weight loss 😊

If you feel confident then join us for the Monday Group weigh-in. If you follow Lowcal and Moreless (our very approachable site Admins), you'll be notified when they post the threads. The latest weigh-in thread can always be found in the Events section, to the right of the home page. 😊

I like to be active on the forum, as that's where we exchange ideas and get our daily dose of motivation and inspiration.😊

Enjoy the forum, good luck and best wishes 😊

Anna

Hi Barnes55,

You will get great support and ideas on here .good luck to you with your effort, you will be fine .

I am so sorry to hear of your sad loss

Like yourself I have had issues with my weight most of my life. I had one real go and lost a lot just before my 50 and felt so good but recently its gradually crept back on and over the last 6 months I suffered with very low moods well partly as I was grieving I Iost my dear mum in April and it was very sudden it really started spiralling out of control my weight and my moods.

I was drinking a but too much alcohol and just comfort eating to hide my sorrow I missed many social occasions because I became a bit of a recluse.

I had joined this forum at the beginning of the year and it was only recently I logged back in on here and realised I knew exactly what I had to do to help me crawl out of the shell that I'd entered. I know what to do, food and exercise wise what I needed was the possitivity that this time I could stick at it and just change my ways and I saw a challenge that may help with .

So look at the pinned posts down below and find the newby post ( one of the sites administrators will be along Im sure soon to advice ) but also look at the other challenges the possitivity challenge is the one that has really helped me cos even on our bad days we have something to be grateful and possitive for

Good luck with your journey ☺

Until you lose someone really close you have no idea how painful it can be. I have grieved for 2 years don't get me wrong I have a great Husband and 2 lovely grown up boys and even 2 Grandkids but nothing replaces my mates friend ship.

I will always miss her but it is time for me to finally move on and live my life. x

I have recently lost my mum and, although she was ill for 4 years and didn't really know who we were for 2 of those years, it is still a dreadful loss and we all miss her terribly.

I too lack motivation and have a husband who tries to be supportive and fails miserably as he will bring home fresh crusty bread and 'I just fancied this chocolate/sweets/crisps etc etc'. And work mates who provide a tuck shop (situated behind my desk) together with a bowl full of sweets and plenty of birthdays with loads of cakes. Not the ideal surroundings for weight loss.

But on this forum everyone is so supportive and have plenty of ideas and recipes to help you out.

And now we have said our final goodbyes to mum on Monday, I am getting back into healthy eating mode.

Keep strong and do it for yourself. You know you can do it as you've done it before!

You can do it and youll be happier when you start losing! Its addictive! ☺

I really feel for you, I cannot imagine life without my best friend - anybody would be struggling in your situation. I am in my sixties now and have been dieting and regaining weight for all my adult life. You have really come to the right place by looking at this web site, I have just completed the 12 week plan and reading about other people's experiences has been a huge help during that time. I've also found it very useful when people post their recipes and healthy meal ideas - this has led me to try out all sorts of different foods. I'm at a healthy weight now and look so much better in my clothes. You have taken a very important first step and I wish you all the luck in the world! Will look forward to hearing how you get on

Welcome. I empathise with your loss. I lost my closest, longest friend Laurin through cancer 8 years ago, age 55. We'd been through everything together: flat sharing, boyfriends, marriage, babies, divorce, bereavements, illness.

Like you I have a loving family but losing my best friend knocked me for six. This and the menopause didnt help my weight one bit, and it wasn't until I reached 61 that I eventually tackled it

That was 3 years ago. With help from this site I managed to lose my spare 32 lbs and have kept it off for the past eighteen months . YOU CAN TOO. Welcome aboard, lots of support on here.

Hi. Have you thought about getting help through a therapyst? You sound really anguished. And maybe you will have the drive to lose weight if you think your health is worth it.

I wish you luck.

Don't dispair, you're not on your own, most of us can relate to what you are saying. I myself have 4 stone to lose. But I'm trying to think positively it's amazing what you can achieve when you get into this mode. I know it's easier said than done but if you can do it, it works wonders. push all those negative thoughts out of your mind and start thinking about what you felt like when you were thinner. The weight you are at now is only temporary not permanent so start thinking ahead of the new you.

Kind Regards

Ian

Barnes55 you've done the most important thing by coming on here - if it was easy none of us would need to do that but this group is so lovely

The main tip is take it a day at a time, writing everything down so you can keep track of your calories while following the 12 week plan

Good luck
