Hi. I am new here and looking for a bit of support with weight loss. Gave up the dreaded ciggys 7 month ago ( do use ecigs occasionally) and have sadly put on a stone in weight :-(

I am only 4ft 11in so every pound shows and I really do feel upset about it. I was 8st 6lb before quitting cigs and now 9st 6lb! Being a shortie, I really should be no more than 8st (ish)!!

Look forward to getting/giving support on here :-)

Very good for the ciggies, commiserations on the weight gain! But you've put on a stone in 7 months, and that is not an enormous amount, so straightforward to remedy! Lots of great advice on this site. Do you think you have bee eating more since giving up? If you are not sure, maybe it is calorie counting time, so that you can establish exactly what you are eating and drinking? And you may need to exercise more. Much more. Nicotine speeds up metabolism, and may suppress appetite. So people that quit smoking are up against it, there is no denying that. But if you can recognize this, and can tackle the problem head on, you will succeed!

Thank you for the lovely reply! Yes I do admit to eating a bit more...but not a stones worth!! :-( I am sad to say that I think smoking definitely kept my weight down! I am starting to calorie count and it appears I am having around 1700-1900 cals a day which is obviously far too much for me! I have just got myself an exercise bike, but only seem to manage a few minutes on it as I am sooo unfit!! :-( I was thinking of trying to keep the cals to around 1200 per day. Do you think I should lose weight at 1200 cals.

Thanks again for replying x

Please don't reduce to 1200 calories per day, put your details into the NHS BMI calculator, for the correct range of calories for you :)

Oh thanks for that. I just went onto the BMI calculator and it's saying I should be on 1284-1651 cals. I can't seem to fathom out if this is for weight loss or maintaining? If it it for weight loss, how much do you think I should lose over a week/month? Thanks for any help/info x

My advice is always to eat as much as you can, while still losing weight, because as you lose weight, your calorie allowance will go down.

It's impossible to say what your weight loss will be, especially so early on, as we have no idea how your body is going to react. A loss of 1 to 2lbs per week, is considered average, but you don't have a lot to lose, which may make it slower.

Try to concentrate on enjoying your new, healthier lifestyle and look at the weight loss as the cherry on the cake, metaphorically speaking ;)

I suggest joining a weigh-in and the Daily Diary, for extra assistance, especially at the beginning :)

Great that you got calorie figures from the NHS BMI calculator. As moreless says, you don't have much weight to lose. You're in a good place! Exercize bike will become easier, but walking is really good as well. With this beautiful weather (here in Holland at least) it's a great time to get to shape. Your energy levels will climb now, especially when the benefits from not smoking start to kick in.

Hi and welcome, g :)

Well done for giving up the cigs! :)

Take a look at the Pinned posts section to the right of your screen (bottom if you're using a mobile), or in the drop down on the 'Posts' page (it says 'arrange by'). Read the Welcome Newbie thread, then move through to the challenges, where we hope you'll find at least one that will appeal to you.

Move down to the Topics, to find a variety of threads, collated into specific topics for ease of access and we ask that you also 'file' your own threads, so that others won't miss your important news.

Take a look at the NHS 12 week plan, as a lot of people have been successful with it, making sure to enter your details into the BMI calculator, to get a calorie allowance tailored to your personal requirements. Don't forget to take your starting measurements and a 'before' picture, as they can be very motivating on days that the scales refuse to co-operate.

We run a weigh-in every day of the week and you'd be very welcome to join one of them. The threads can always be found in the Events section, to the right of the HOME page, bottom on a mobile.

We also run a Daily Diary, where we share our meal and exercise plans for the day. It's a great place to get ideas and to keep us focused. The link can also be found in Events.

Be aware, that the HU app doesn't give you access to all of our important features, so we advise that you use the full website page.

We've found that to get the best out of this community, we need to be active on the forum, as it's where we exchange information, get motivation and inspiration and make friends. We hope that you'll join us here, regularly, too.

It's only left for me to wish you well on your journey :)
