Hi, do you take medicine. My husband takes something as a prevention and something else during flair up. Rich food and too much alcohol sets him off so he often has a flair up on holiday which makes walking tricky when his toes hurt.

My husband has had a few attacks of gout since last year. He's not overweight, he plays golf three times a week (and gets grumpy when he has a flare up and can't play!😟)

Since he was first diagnosed, we have tried to modify our diets (I'm eating what he does to support him ) and have followed all the NHS advice (Google diet sheet for gout). He needs to up his fluid intake and we have gone on to decaf coffee which I think is helping. He is on medication from the doctor, both long term and for flare ups.

I'd be interested in any tips others can give us.

Hi

I have had this condition for two years now and am on Alpurinol, during the time on Alpurinol I have had just two flare ups, the first was believe it or not eating Twiglets!..I searched out a tub at Christmas and within two days its started..so avoid those ( its the yeast extract in them) that triggers the Gout.

Next attack was earlier this year and I had wanted to lose a little weight so started having an apple as a snack instead of something else ( I had about three or four per day, I overdid the fruit as I also usually have a banana as well which adds to the fructose)

so avoid too much fruit as the fructose triggers an attack.

Other than that I avoid all offal (liver, kidneys, etc and also game)

I also drink Cider only and clear spirit (Vodka etc)

touch wood I am Gout free, also drink plenty of water as this does help.

That’s interesting - my husband eats loads of fruit, thinking it was a healthy snack.!

Hi, Well I can only comment on what affected me, some people may have different tolerances, I have also been told that red onion helps reduce the uric acid.

Thank you for you help. Twiglets, oh no. One of my favourite things. I have cut down on red meat and have two meat free days every week. Ive also cut bread intake in half. Fruit wasn't such a hardship except for pineapple. Things are better but still getting twinges. Thanks again

I believe gout is an inflammatory condition and therefore onions, garlic, turmeric, ginger and cinnamon should help. Use the spices in cooking or stir them into hot hater with lemon.

The Medicinal Chef Dale Pinnock probably has something to say about what foods are good for gout.

Thanks for your very helpful reply. Only diagnosed today so have to see GP next week but I would like to try natural remedies and diet first. Thanks again

rosieone I read yesterday that eating celery and reducing intake of fructose (sugar found in fruit), thought of you when I was reading it.

It seems gout is because of a build up of Uric Acid which then crystallises between the joints as humans have no enzyme for breaking it down.

I'd been having more and more frequent gout attacks for three years, and they became monthly, and more and more severe. I decided to try every remedy I could find as long as it wasn't too whacky. So I gave up beer and cider, though I wasn't a particularly heavy drinker. I also gave up most dense carbs such as bread, potatoes and rice. I eat heaps of fruit and veg, reduced red meats etc, though still eat them occasionally. I start most days with a fruit and veg smoothy of some sort, with a teaspoon of nutmeg and another of turmeric. No gout for three months, and I've lost over 10kg. Feeling so much fitter that I've joined a gym and go for an hour 4 times a week. Last night was the Christmas party and I was two hours on the dance floor. That would never have been possible before even between attacks. My feet have lost the reddish hue that I thought was normal, and my Achilles' tendons have regained much of their definition. My shoes now feel a bit loose, and I can see the outline of my metatarsals. I absolutely loved my beer, bread and potatoes but I hated gout much more. If I never have any of that stuff again I won't miss it, though I still do treat myself once in a rare while. When I do, I enjoy it all the more than if they had just been daily staples.
