Binge eating and falling out of routine

Hi everyone,

I'm new here, thought I'd give this a go because it feels like I've tried everything else. When I was 17 I went down from size 22 to size 10 in about 6 months. Since then I've been putting on and loosing weight mostly due to my binge eating and that's been the case for the last 3 years. I loose weight during summer but I put it on the moment I get back to uni. My guess is stress and lack of sleep, at least that's what I figured out from reading.I hate it because I go from being confident to feeling disgusted with myself and not wanting to leave my room every few months. I'm trying to loose weight again and I lost 4kg but now being back home from uni has thrown off my routine and it's hard to get back into it. Does anyone have any advice on how not to binge eat and how to get back into the diet routine?

Thank you,

Punzie xx

Hi and welcome, Punzie :)

I think that maybe you'll feel less likely to binge, if you can get out of the 'diet' mindset. If you make sustainable changes for a healthier lifestyle, you'll lose weight without the need to starve and then binge.

Take a look at the Pinned posts section to the right of your screen (bottom if you're using a mobile), or in the drop down on the 'Posts' page (it says 'arrange by'). Read the Welcome Newbie thread, then move through to the challenges, where we hope you'll find at least one that will appeal to you.

Move down to the Topics, to find a variety of threads, collated into specific topics for ease of access and we ask that you also 'file' your own threads, so that others won't miss your important news.

Take a look at the NHS 12 week plan, as a lot of people have been successful with it, making sure to enter your details into the BMI calculator, to get a calorie allowance tailored to your personal requirements. Don't forget to take your starting measurements and a 'before' picture, as they can be very motivating on days that the scales refuse to co-operate.

We run a weigh-in every day of the week and you'd be very welcome to join one of them. The threads can always be found in the Events section, to the right of the HOME page, bottom on a mobile.

We also run a Daily Diary, where we share our meal and exercise plans for the day. It's a great place to get ideas and to keep us focused. The link can also be found in Events.

Be aware, that the HU app doesn't give you access to all of our important features, so we advise that you use the full website page.

We've found that to get the best out of this community, we need to be active on the forum, as it's where we exchange information, get motivation and inspiration and make friends. We hope that you'll join us here, regularly, too.

It's only left for me to wish you well on your journey :)

Hi moreless ! :)

Thank you for such a warm welcoming to the community! :) I had a look around the page and made loads of notes as well as installed some apps on my phone. I'm really glad I found this website, makes the change in my diet seem so much more enjoyable and not scary. This community is such a great idea, I'm very happy it exists! :) xx

Hi Punzie! :)

I think moreless is right, you don't need to be on a diet but find a healthier lifestyle. And you've definitely come to the right place for that. :)

And you've already said it, you need to get into a routine that works for you and that starts with planning. If you have a plan it's not quite as easy to slide into to the same old bad habits. Not to say that it doesn't happen mind, I think we all go through tough patches. The trick is to draw a line under them, not beat yourself up, and move on with the healthy plan.

Good luck, we'll all be rooting for you. :D

Hi Punzie -

I am relatively new on this forum but I am finding all the support on here soooo useful.

I have taken up the NHS 12-week plan which you can find on the site. I calorie-count and I plan all my meals in advance. So I plan in my snacks, and I pick things that I like, but they have to fit within my calorie allowance for the day. I used the BMI calculator on the site to tell me what my calorie allowance should be, and there's a calorie checker which helps me calculate the calorie content of what I am planning - as well as the "back of the pack" info.

The Daily Diary helps me stay (mostly!) on track as I "own" my decisions to eat. I know that if I binge (and believe me, I am capable!) then I will be sabotaging my own weight loss and wasting my own time.

It's also helped me examine what (and when, and sometimes even why) I eat, and has helped me find out healthier choices I can make.

And the people here are truly so helpful and supportive.

Cheering you on!

Hi bikegrrrl ! :)

I'm also following the 12 weeks NHS plan although I started it over because I wasn't following it properly. I find it really helpful to get guidance for every week of my diet change.

I calculated my BMI too but I'm not too sure if I should rely on it too much because it doesn't take into account your muscle mass. It tells me that I should weight 64kg to be on the verge of normal weight - overweight and that would be size 8 for me if not smaller. I'm aiming for size 10 smallest.

My worst binge eating accidents are when I'm so upset or stressed that I don't even notice I've done it until after it has happened. Do you experience this too?

Thank you for the support and good luck to you too! :) xx

Hi Punzie , I guess from what you say you you will be aiming to lose weight just until you are a size you're comfortable with, and then maintain it. Like you I do not want to be too slim (but for different reasons - muscle mass is not something I'm greatly blessed with but I'm in my mid-50s and I don't want to look too haggard! Do you do a lot of sport?)

I always notice if I'm eating too much but in the past I have done it anyway ... a kind of "oh, sod it!" feeling as I reach for yet another biscuit. I do get quite stressed at work, But I also come from a culture where food is a big part of family life, love, celebration, caring for other people and oneself, etc.

Look forward to seeing you succeed.
