Returning after too long

its 3am, and i cant sleep. im in pain and i need an operation, but they wont operate as my current BMI is way too high, so im returning here, wanting to give this a proper go because well, i dont want the rest of my life to be pain and fatigue, as that seems to sum me up these days. ive printed off week 1 and will read it properly hopefully after ive managed to sleep. Anyway, im hoping that it can work this time, and well, i can stick with it because i really need to. Anyway that my 3am rant, and me saying hello. Im hoping in a few hours I may feel a little more positive once ive pondered the reading material. Oh and I will also state the doc has put me on Orlistat, but with no diet advice, and im struggling, and i remembered this place/diet which is why i returned. is it just me or does it seem silly to be put on an obesity drug with zero dietary advice? Anyway, im signing off, and will catch up at hopefully a more "normal" hour.

Hi Janette,

Like you I'm having trouble sleeping albeit I'm very tired! So sorry you're in pain and it sounds like you're feeling unsupported by your GP. Maybe your surgery could give you details of dietitian at your local hospital? Hopefully you'll feel a little better once you've slept and you don't need me to tell you how supportive and helpful people here are. Take care and stay positive.

Hi Jeanette I hope you have managed to sleep a little😊 things are always worse when we are tired. How much weight are you aiming for before they will operate? There's so much support and advice here it's helped me so much. Check out and download the 12 week plan I find it helped me no end. You have lots of reasons to lose weight the operation being the main one and being pain free. I posted the weigh in today and put a picture of just some other health benefits from weight loss other than feeling fitter and looking slimmer. Are you going to choose a weigh in day? they are everyday of the week so the choice is yours you are welcome on any.

Have you family support? Also make yourself a small goal say to lose half a stone by midsummers day June 21st that's 4 weeks away and you could get your first half stone badge too. I also put £1 away in a jar for every pound of weight lost then when I have got where I want to be it will buy me a little something to remember my journey. I can see you joined a while ago so hopefully you have lots of ideas already to help you along the way. As already Said if the doc has put you on medication I would have thought following it up with diet advice or even weigh in checks at the surgery would be favourable.

Good luck this is day 1 where you are in control of you and your way forward begins👍

All the best keep us informed how you get on and indeed post any good ideas, tips you have on here. 💐 Bev

Welcome Janette to the forum we are a good bunch here and try to help one another. First there. Is a daily diary where we put our food intake for the day. We check one anothers meal and take ideas from it so we eat different things. Orlistat is a drug that stops you from absorbing fats. If you take to much fats it will make you go to the toilet a lot and can cause accidents if you know what I mean. I should go to your drs and they will explain it more. You will fell better after a good sleep.

Welcome back, Janette. Sorry you are in such pain with no practical support from your GP. We are all here to support you. Do you think your practice nurse might be able to help? I hope the replies you've received so far help to make you feel more positive even if only by a little bit. Stay active on the forum as I have found that to be a fantastic motivator. 💐💐

Welcome back to the forum Janette1 Pain is so debilitating. I have not experienced orlistat but understand the side effects are not pleasant. Maybe others on here who have used it will be able to offer advice.

I would just say try to stick with the forum and join in the conversations as much as possible.

I do hope your pain eases and you begin to be able to sleep. Camomile tea can help with sleeping, as can cutting out caffeine.

Take care and good luck

Hello Janette wishing you all the very best I'm sure you will do it

I'm just recovering from an operation I was in terrible pain for almost a year and now I have a new lease of life

Just keep that in mind the pain free days and restful nights you will have when you think it's food that is stopping the operation and that's all It will be so worth it

I can't believe they put you on that drug with no diet advice I would definitely go back and ask

You will get loads of support on here keep posting and let us know how you are doing xxx

Welcome to the weigh loss forum.

Sorry to hear your in pain and it's keeping you awake. To help you get started have a look at the Daily Diary to see what other members are having in their plans, it just might help with your first week.

Take a look at the Welcome Newbie post in the Pinned post section at the right hand side or at the bottom if your on a mobile. Have a look at the nhs 12 week plan, many members have had success following this plan. Use the BMI checker to work out your daily calorie allowance.

Have a look at the Daily Diary which you can find on the Home page in Events. It is where all the members are sharing their daily plans on what they are eating and any exercise they are doing. This thread will give you some ideas on how to start.

Thank you everyone for your replies, i honestly didnt expect such positivity when i woke up (i managed a few hours). i will go through individual advice when im a little more awake, but it just didnt seem right not to say thanks everyone.

Also, it is my intention to try the 12 week plan on here, and i will join one of the weigh ins as well.

So thanks everyone

Hi and welcome

I was put on orlistat by my doctor some years ago, you need to stick to a very low fat diet, any fat passes through you in liquid form and you can have leakage from your back passage it really isn't pleasant. Yes you can and do lose weight but as soon as I came off it the weight piled back on and I gained more.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news,

Personally I wouldn't take it, sensible healthy eating is definitely better for you and with the support from this forum you can achieve your goals

Good luck

Thank you for your feedback regarding Orlistat, I am having the issues you describe, it is limiting what i am able to do, I am about to cancel a patient forum meeting I was going to be attending this evening as it's pretty uncontrollable today. Im seeing my doctor soon and will discuss all this with her and see what I think. Would you say that it increased your weight loss while you were taking it, compared to just healthy eating?

in reply to Janette1

No not really, and it definitely didn't teach me good choices, self discipline or a way to sustain the loss. I was scared to do anything or go out in the end, it really did begin to take over my life

Sorry if I'm putting you off, but as you are already developing these symptoms you will need to either cut out fat completely, put up with nasty symptoms or try a different route. Xx
