If you're really hungry, Emma, then you need to reassess what you're eating. Healthy fats will be more satiating.

If you're not sure whether you're experiencing want, or need, have a glass of water and distract yourself for a while, to see if it passes :)

Yes thats some real good advice right there - distinguishing between want and need.

It's sometimes very difficult to tell the difference, especially at the start of our journeys :)

Are you getting enough calories? I know I wasn't when I started my journey.

It is tempting to eat too little to speed up the losing process, but it rarely works for very long. Being hungry might end up in overeating.

Sound advice received, thus far.

As such, I echo the thoughts of others in suggesting that however much you wish to lose, based upon current weight and level of activity, the correct energy balance needs to be achieved.

Restrict intake too severely and the body will quickly grow wise to the fact sufficient energy isn’t being received. To compensate, it’ll revert to fat storage mode and reduce rate of metabolism, making it difficult to get anywhere fast, since you simply won’t have the energy or the inclination to do so.

Despite current weight, although weight may have been gained in recent years due to various events, with a little helpful guidance from the forum, there’s certainly no reason why you can’t lose at least a stone over the course of the summer, something that’ll no doubt help to improve self-confidence as the weather becomes warmer.

Ultimately, to begin allowing the body to utilise fat as an energy source, resulting in an improved composition, you need to know your numbers.

If you’ve not already done so, use the NHS BMI calculator to ascertain minimum/maximum calorie recommendations, seeking to maintain a daily calorie deficit from the maximum recommendation.

Alternatively, if you'd like to calculate energy requirements using the formula that I use (Miflin St. Jeor method), let me know and I'll happily provide the equation (don't worry, it's not complicated).

Having calculated figures, based upon current measurements and level of activity, try to maintain a daily deficit of up to 500Kcal from maximum recommendation, ensuring that the deficit introduced doesn’t exceed the difference between the two amounts, since sufficient calories should be consumed to satisfy the lower figure at the very least (to keep metabolism firing).

With each 7-10lb reduction in weight, figures ought to be re-assessed since less energy will be required to satisfy both, on the assumption that activity level remains the same; re-calculating figures also helps to avoid the dreaded plateau.
