Hi, I am Morbidly Obese and need to lose a lot of weight. I have been going to Slimming World but a Vitamin D3 Deficiency has set me back. I was suppose to go tonight to do my 12 week countdown AGAIN!! But thought I wonder if calorie counting will work .... does it work??? The 1,400 limit is very low !!!!!

Hi and welcome, Jane :)

The 1400 calorie allowance is a generic amount and you need to put your details into the NHS BMI calculator, for an allowance tailored to your requirements :)

Take a look at the Pinned posts section to the right of your screen (bottom if you're using a mobile), or in the drop down on the 'Posts' page (it says 'arrange by'). Read the Welcome Newbie thread, then move through to the challenges, where we hope you'll find at least one that will appeal to you.

Move down to the Topics, to find a variety of threads, collated into specific topics for ease of access and we ask that you also 'file' your own threads, so that others won't miss your important news.

Take a look at the NHS 12 week plan, as a lot of people have been successful with it, making sure to enter your details into the BMI calculator, to get a calorie allowance tailored to your personal requirements. Don't forget to take your starting measurements and a 'before' picture, as they can be very motivating on days that the scales refuse to co-operate.

We run daily weigh-in's and you'd be very welcome to join us. The threads can always be found in the Events section, to the right of the HOME page, bottom on a mobile.

We also run a Daily Diary, where we share our meal and exercise plans for the day. It's a great place to get ideas and to keep us focused. The link can also be found in Events.

Be aware, that the HU app doesn't give you access to all of our important features, so we advise that you use the full website page.

We've found that to get the best out of this community, we need to be active on the forum, as it's where we exchange information, get motivation and inspiration and make friends. We hope that you'll join us here, regularly, too.

It's only left for me to wish you well on your journey :)

I find calorie counting a good way to shed the pounds. However, after a health scare a month ago I now have to be quite selective about my diet so I'm following a Mediterranean diet. It's a matter of finding what's right for you, because if you find a system difficult to fit into your lifestyle or you don't enjoy, you will simply revert to old habits. Good luck with whatever you decide on.

Yes definitely, and it also means you don't have to cut out any food, so as long as you count it you can have some, I have a really bad ice cream fetish I allow myself a treat of ice cream each week in my allowance

Oh and 1400 calories is not necessarily what you need to be having I'm allowed 1600 -1700 per day and I'm losing weight and I'm not hungry

Good luck

yep my allowance is between 1800-2000 a day at present, it will change depending on your activity and your BMI so i suggest checking that every couple of weeks, just to make sure you're still supposed to be having that amount. The 1400is for average i think, I'm well above that!

if you are heavier go on the NHS website and type in your weight and they will give you your calories to use to lose, I am 17 stone 2 and am allowed 1661-2000 a day I go for lower one if I'm honest but if you eat smart it goes a long way. I struggle to eat all mine now I have only eaten 890 so far and had dinner so am going to have a fruit salad with yoghurt later. remember to fill half you plate with salad or fruit and portion control is key. I also have done slimming world and lost almost 6 stone but after the weight froze and couldn't go down anymore, i think the problem is "fill your boots" you eat so much pasta 75g has over 300 calories and I know i was eaten double that with dinner (and thats being honest) If you find slimming world easier go with it and when you stop losing go calorie control for a boost :)

Hi I have found it worked I have lost just over a stone since January. I have on the whole kept to the 1400/day but after occassioanl blips I have on occassions gone over the 1400 but as long as I was under the 1650 which is what the BMI calculator reccommended at the lower range I was ok with the excess. Surprisingly I was not often hungry though now I am close to my target weight and gradually increasing my calories to maintenance level I have found I tend to be more hungry! I had plan to increase my daily amount every 2 weeks but I've ended up increasing a week early! I suppose as long as you don't continually feel hungry at 1400 then if you can stick to that but if you are hyngry then eat the calories at the bottom range given by the NHS BMI calculator
