I don't know if I can...

I came across this 12 week programme by chance on Pinterest

I've struggled a long time with my weight but mostly because I eat to make myself feel better and then I hate the person I've become and so the cycle goes on...

I'm not sure this plan will work for me as I've struggled to find something to help with my mental Heath and that's a big part of my overeating and a big reason I do.

I fear what will happen if I can't deal with my feelings, even temporarily with food. Is there anyone out there who's been through similar?

I want to really make a difference to me and my lifestyle. I'm not convinced that the willpower will be enough.

Maybe this isn't the right place for me but I thought I'd find out for sure...

Xx

Morning Elyg

Welcome to the weight loss forum.

Take a look at the Welcome Newbie post in the Pinned post section on the right hand side or at the bottom if your on a mobile. Have a look at the nhs 12 week plan, many members here have had success following this plan. Use the BMI checker to work out your daily calorie allowance.

Below the Pinned posts are the Topics where members share a range of weight related subjects.

Take your measurements at the start along with a photo so you can see the changes on the days when the scales don't move.

We have weigh-ins everyday, Wednesday are full at the moment, but feel free to join us on any other day. You can find the Weigh-ins posted on the Home page in the Events section. Just click on the post in Events and state your starting weight, what you would like to lose and any loss/gain or maintain you have had over the week.

To get the best from the forum be active. Share experiences, ideas and tips. Read through some of the posts in the Topic section they are good for motivation and very inspiring.

Have a good first week.

Hi. If you believe you can do it you will. If you feel you need support with mental issues you could do that first or at the same time. You could get help from a counsellor or see your gp.

I'm on medication and I've seen a counsellor. Thank for replying.

Ok so I know if you believe in yourself you can do it. I failed to lose weight for years - a stone off, stone on. I gained a lot of weight at uni and never lost it. I was 23 stone in September, I am 18 stone 7 now. Something just clicked into place and I won't let myself down this time. I see it as a permanent lifestyle change though. I wish you luck and willpower!

Thanks so much. I'm willing to give it my best shot. I just have these fears of how it'll affect my mind when I can comfort with food.

Losing my safety blanket.

Being here will help with people like yourself

Well done on your loss and thank you.

After I lost my mum last April I became very low and a comfort eater and piled pounds off (thats always been me tho ) 😯

I'd joined this forum in the Feb and had only just been dipping in and out Then Mum Passed away I just let everything go, we were very close even though I have great sisters and friends.

I went to my GP over something totally different and just burst out crying he gave me details of cruise - Bereavment counciing but before ringing I sat and thought.... I had put on quite a few stones which was also contributing to how I felt. I started re looking at this site and found a lot of very lovely people. Then HealthyTanja challenge came up my happiness score was very low , I thought I'd give it a go and ok yes a few blips happenened in Jan but focusing on good has helped me (even on this wet yukky grey day) I try and find something possitive and in general it does make me feel happier and in turn healthier and now I've lost weight cos I deserve it ..... we all do !! .......

I intend to stick it out here until I lose what I need and start maintaining and Im sure you can do it too - its called mindfulness and we can all do it.

Good Luck 😮

I've certainly struggled with my mental health. Although it is fairly stable right now, there are times when I have been very unwell.

I find that when I get control over my eating, I begin to feel more control over other areas of my life too. I tried the local eating disorder clinic, but I found the insistence I didn't try to lose weight didn't help...and the 10 weeks of counseling didn't get me anywhere really.

What has helped me in the past is taking time to write lists! Not trying to analyze why I am the way I am, but how to get healthy in a realistic way, in all areas of my life.

My advice would be: what have you got to lose? If it works- yay! If not, then speak to your councilor about what you could try next.

Good luck x

I also keep thoughts written down in a journal and keep a food diary because I do feel I know all the principles of dieting and exercise.

I don't have an extreme issue with food but have tended to binge and comfort eat. This 12 week plan for me is all about gaining control over bad habits. I've been focusing on health more than weight loss, especially on gaining my 5 a day which helps with replacing the crap. All I would say is be mindful of how you feel so you tweak the diet if you start getting too low or weak. Look into foods that lower your cortisol release as well as improves mood, that and some supplements could help. Obviously check they don't clash with your medicine before taking any supplements. Good luck with it, getting the right positive mental attitude will really decide whether you can get through it. Just think health rather than weight loss.

It is massively difficult to let go of your coping mechanisms when your mental health isn't good. I've more or less stopped self harming, I've cut down massively on smoking (usually only have them maybe 4 or 5 days a month?) and now I'm trying to work on my unhealthy relationship with food. Quite often, this sort of thing is best attacked with external help, be it a doctor/dietician/therapist etc. but it is possible to do it on your own, but my personal experience (not saying this will necessarily happen to anyone else) is that I ended up swapping out bad coping mechanisms for other ones. But with food, I've failed many times, but eventually you get back on the wagon enough times maybe one time it sticks.

Also, obvs if your medication works, don't change it! But, a lot of them can have weight gain and increased appetite as side effects. I put on about 3 stone in 18 months while I was in mirtazapine. Once I started on trazodone, I didn't lose any weight, but I did start maintaining it.

I'm not doing the 12 week plan per se (I'm worried about it hitting my failure triggers if I have bad days) but I am reading the guidelines and taking it on board at my own pace. I'm finding logging runs and gym sessions in an app called Fitocracy beneficial, because you're just competing with yourself, everything is progress and you can see what you've achieved. Also recently started calorie counting with My Fitness Pal, because even if you're having bad days, I think it's good to be aware of how much extra comfort food can have? And with knowledge comes power etc. etc.
