Set off full of determination this time I am going to succeed. Bought petrol and saw kit kats and toffees. Bought them in case young grandchildren called. Perfect day 8pm tried one kIt Kat then another then another !!!.Posting this here to show myself how stupid I was and I don't really like Kit Kats.
Lesson learnt no goodies to be bought in any circumstances.

Maybe put the pennies aside ready to give the grandchildren (according to age) that way you have allocated a treat that they get to choose... And there is no temptation going home with you?
I did something similar but my weakness are crisps! I went shopping felt peckish bought small bag of sunbites got to till and regretted putting in the basket but bought them anyway. So proud of myself since I didn't eat them on the way home- read a book instead- difficult to eat crisps and read a book so was really pleased with myself. However later in the evening ate them though wasn't hungry and because I had a large bag of popchips- ready for my night shift meal of salsa and dippers I ate that as well though half way through the bag I was full but continued eating them anyway since they'd just go off wouldn't they?? Its amazing what excuses you can come up with to continue doing something you know you shouldn't. On the positive it made me stick to my menu plan and calorie totals for the rest of the week. I'll also only buy the popchips on the day of my night shift so I won't have any temptation in the house if my will power disappears!
Have you tried Tesco's apple crisps? They are 100 % apple (no fat at all) and very lovely plus they count as one of your five a day. They also do beetroot crisps, sweet potato and one or two other varieties - all with no fat and no added salt. I love them and don't feel the guilt once they have been eaten. I have 2/3 bags every week and the bags aren't huge - 100 -105 cals each. x
Oh Rossie, I howled with laughter when I read your post; In my "former life" if chocolate, biscuits and especially cakes came over the threshold of my house, then I would eat them one after the other at the earliest possible opportunity, then I would sit in the corner like a big, bloated pudding wishing I hadn't done it! Ridding myself of temptation was my very first task in my very first week of turning over a new leaf; everyone else in the house has just had to go with it and although my hubby grumbled at first he has lost 2 stone himself now and is very pleased with me. I bet the grandkids would prefer an hour or two of playing in the garden than a boring old kit kat anyway x
The fact that you've lost 5 stones and your hubby 2 stones... WOW 🎉🎉🎉. Good advice from a reliable source. Well done both of you.
Sour Apple loops or Tangfastics are a weakness for me.. Any sour jellies!! They are banned from my home, handbag and all pockets!! I still have a packet in my drawer in the office, but I only go into the office one day a week, and I have been offering them to my workmates and having just 1! Winning the battles to keep fighting the war!!
Now that's a good idea; if you can't bear throwing away the treats, offer them around and everyone loves you for being so generous! I'll definitely be doing that in the future x
If losing weight was easy then they'd all be doing it. At least like the rest of us you are trying, you are acknowledging where you were greedy (if I may say) and you know what to try not to do next time. We have all been there many times and every time we don't do this we should congratulate ourselves.
I agree with some of the previous posters. This would have been me once upon a time! I think we sometimes have to be honest with ourselves - am I buying these treats "just in case" or am I buying for me "just in case"?
If you want something in case the grandchildren drop around, maybe buy something that you know won't tempt you in the slightest - for example, for me it would be a packet of iced ring biscuits - I hate the gritty feeling on my teeth!
We do have goodies in the house - I have a tin with single portion chocolate bars (2 finger Kit-kats, Twix, Drifters, etc). They are for my hubbie who likes one now and again (he doesn't need to lose weight) and of course there is nothing to stop me from taking one - HOWEVER, I would always ask myself "Do I really want this more than I want to lose weight?"
Dealing with temptation is always going to be a part of life in the future, so I think it's important to learn how to get your mind and head around knowing that temptation is there but that you can resist it. I know it's easier said than done, but with enough practice, it becomes a natural way of dealing with things..... and yes, the chocolate bar may be delicious and yummy - for a few seconds.... but then the feeling of failure and disgust with ones self for having eaten it arrives! However, the positive glow that you feel for having managed to resist something successfully lasts much longer.
I say this as someone who has been losing weight for five years now.... and changing my behaviour around food was a massive part of my success.
You sound just like my lovely husband. He's lost 30lb having been overweight for most of his adult life. We have 5 kids in the house and he said to me "don't not buy treats, I need to get used to just not eating them". I'm so proud of him as he's a total carb fiend and I bought the kids hot cross buns as a treat this weekend. He didn't even have one, bless him.
I just love your posts! It is wonderful to know just how you have maintained a healthy lifestyle for so long despite all of the temptations we all face on a daily basis; you give wonderful detail of how you think about food and exercise, and thank you so much for sharing so that we all have a better chance of achieving success like yours. I do so hope I am still going strong in five years' time too although I don't necessarily want to lose too much more, but to keep the weight off is my dream. x
Aww, thanks kalahuchi !! I guess that over time I have learned these ways to think differently and behave differently. I'm not perfect though... (just munching a Bakewell tart from M&S with my cuppa!)
One of the first things I learnt was - if it's not in the house I can't eat it!!
My worst time is evenings after dinner in front of TV when I'm not even hungry! I now keep grapes in the fridge for the nights when I HAVE to have something sweet after dinner and it does the job, works for me anyway. Good luck with your journey.
I think the TV adverts and cookery programmes are often to blame - the number of food adverts (especially around Valentines Day, Easter, Christmas...) are unbelievable. Not to mention things like Master Chef, British Bake Off, etc, etc. Even if we weren't thinking of food, we soon are!
Thank you all for support and very helpful comments which I will keep on board. I am most grateful and feel optimistic that with your support I will succeed.
