Hi all - am new to the site today. I have joined to get some support/encouragement as I really struggle to do this alone.
Aiming to lose around 3 stone...my main weakness is night snacking. Look forward to getting to know people here and hope I can support you as much as you support me. x

Hello alisonx and welcome to the weight loss forum ☺
The first place to look is at the Pinned posts section to the right of your screen (bottom if you're using a mobile), read the Welcome Newbie thread first and move through to the challenges, where we hope you'll find at least one that will appeal to you ☺
Move down to the Topics, to find a variety of threads, collated into specific topics for ease of access and we ask that you also 'file' your own threads, so that others won't miss your important news ☺
Have a look at the NHS 12 week plan, as many people have had success with it. Also use the BMI checker to find your target calories, it's important to eat enough. Don't forget to take your starting measurements and a 'before' picture, as they can be very motivating on days that the scales refuse to co-operate ☺
The forum also have group weigh-ins every day, but they are quite busy. If you wish to take part Sunday is the quietest day but you are welcome to join any day. The threads can always be found in the Events section, to the right of the 'home' page, or at the very bottom (after all the posts) on a mobile.☺
We've found that to get the best out of this community, we need to be active on the forum, as it's where we exchange information, get motivation and inspiration and make friends. We hope that you'll join us here, regularly, too. This is especially helpful to alleviate evening nibbling ☺
You'll notice a grey box next to people's names, these are achievement badges, and as a new member you may have a 'Newbie' badge. If you have any questions or would like a Newbie badge please just ask ☺
I can sympathise with the night snacking (and in my case drinking also). I'm on my sixth week and counting calories has been the biggest help. Totting them up as I go along means I know when I've reached my limit and that helps me mentally to stop (mostly )
Best of luck in your endeavor your in good company here. There is a wealth of experience, help, support and knowledge. Re your night snacking, learn from one of my many mistakes, l merrily munched on grapes thinking that they are a healthy thing to snack on, which of course they are. But beware. A punnet which is easy to go through while watching the tv is 350 calories! Ooooops.
Have you tried freezing grapes? You don't eat so many and they are like little, self-contained, sorbets. Wonderful! Also I freeze sliced bananas and eat in the same way - be careful if you decide to freeze bananas before freezing as they are very hard and the knife can slip!
You should have seen my face when I read your post. I literally darted my eyes at the grapes on the nearby table and swore at them under my breathe....
Newbie too. I try to stick to just an apple in the evening as It is one of the lower GI fruits, keeping you fuller for longer and has good fiber content. I believe it is said that only 2 of your 5 a Day should be fruit as this won't make to much difference to your blood sugar levels or add to many more calories. 1 handful approximately 14 grapes is a portion. Here is a good link for your 5 a Day portion sizes. Hope that helps. And yes frozen fruit is gorgeous and lasts longer too.
I joined a couple of weeks ago now and it's a great forum for motivation and inspiration. I have the my fitness pal app on my phone and track my calories as I go. I've found this really helps as I am a terrible evening snacker (even when not hungry - it's just a habit). If I really can't resist temptation, I keep in lower fat biscuits like rich tea. I've heard that giving yourself a cut off time helps so for example aim to not eat anything after 7pm?
Hi alisonx hope all goes well with your weight loss. I really struggled with losing weight before I joined here and am now so happy that I did join as I have learnt so much on here and believe it or not I actually eat more than I ever did before but in different ways and am managing to lose weight. I never ate enough calories before which was making me put on weight all the time and now I am making myself eat enough calories which means I have to eat more. Most of it is healthier but I am not stopping myself if I want to eat something else just being careful with how much the portion size is. Good luck.
HI alisonx! welcome! my main problem is night snacking as well. i wake up around 2 or 3am and eat myself into a sugar coma then go back to bed and sleep. but i have found a light over the counter sleep medicine that will keep me asleep all night long. it has been about 2 weeks since i woke up and ate at night so i am feeling better about myself and have lost about 2 or 3 pounds even tho i have not changed anything else about my diet. i do need some help learning how to exercise when i can barely walk due to an issue with one of my feet, but i have access to a swimming pool which if i worked at it i could use whenever i needed to. i am just lazy.
thanks for your msg. Sorry to hear about your foot. If you check you tube I am sure there are aerobics that you can do sitting down - so at least you don't need to make the trip to the pool
Welcome Alisonx Great site, great encouragement and some real great supportive people. Calorie counting has really helped. If you follow it and write down everything it really makes you think "don't do it". I made it into a spreadsheet and record it all and just because you have calories left from your daily allowance, don't think you have to use them. It seems to be working for me for first time in years I am actually losing weight 16lbs since beginning of January. Good luck.
I log all my calories on myfitnesspal - however I am good at "forgetting" to add things I know I shouldn't have had because it will put me over the daily allowance. I am just cheating myself...so hopefully this is a new beginning and if I can lose 16lbs by March I will be delighted
I am a newbie as well, I have 2 st to get of I find counting calories the best way for me. I try to find something to keep my hands busy in the evening, that has helped me ... Good luck...
