I first signed up to the site about 18 months ago when I was 20 and struggling to walk up the small hill to work. I lost around a stone but then I got into a relationship with someone who has a metabolism that works at the speed of light and I gained it all back (and more). Not that I blame him!
Anyway I'm disappointed to have made myself obese at such a young age but definitely feeling more committed to changing my lifestyle this time round, so I thought I'd say hello.

Well done for losing weight. You've done it once and you can do it again. If your partner can eat for england, then let him do it. Stick to smaller meals for yourself. Look at each thing on your plate and think, "Do I really need it" I think with the busy lives we lead and the short and sometimes chaotic breaks we have at work, we all tend to eat more in case we get hungry later on. If you have access to your food throughout the day, then take some of the food back off your plate. Wait half an hour after eating and see if you are still hungry. If you are, then help yourself to a small healthy snack. Don't forget, the more you pile on the plate, the harder you have to work to get it off. Good luck.
thank you jjgilb!! it was surprisingly easy last time but I think that was because I had something to work towards (a holiday) and now I am back to 'normal' life. The 'if your partner can eat for england, then let him do it' bit made me laugh but it's also true - so I've told him we're probably just going to have to eat separate meals from now on which means I can plan ahead more easily and have food ready prepared so I don't end up buying/eating unnecessary things. Thank you for the advice
p.s. the 'the more you pile on the plate, the harder you have to work to get it off' bit actually has been helpful already when it comes to portion control
Hello hudson95 and welcome to the weight loss forum
The first place to look is at the Pinned posts section to the right of your screen (bottom if you're using a mobile), read the Welcome Newbie thread first and move through to the challenges, where we hope you'll find at least one that will appeal to you ☺
Move down to the Topics, to find a variety of threads, collated into specific topics for ease of access and we ask that you also 'file' your own threads, so that others won't miss your important news ☺
Have a look at the NHS 12 week plan, as many people have had success with it. Also use the BMI checker to find your target calories, it's important to eat enough. Don't forget to take your starting measurements and a 'before' picture, as they can be very motivating on days that the scales refuse to co-operate ☺
The forum also have group weigh-ins every day, but they are quite busy. If you wish to take part Sunday is the quietest day but you are welcome to join any day. The threads can always be found in the Events section, to the right of the 'home' page, or at the very bottom (after all the posts) on a mobile.☺
We've found that to get the best out of this community, we need to be active on the forum, as it's where we exchange information, get motivation and inspiration and make friends. We hope that you'll join us here, regularly, too ☺
You'll notice a grey box next to people's names, these are achievement badges, and as a new member you may have a 'Newbie' badge. If you have any questions or would like a Newbie badge please just ask ☺
Just a thought, but could your partner's speed of light metabolism be at least partly because he is very active and therefore burning off what he eats? If so, you could copy that bit of his lifestyle, while controlling your intake, and this will really help you get the weight coming off.
Although we often think people have "fast" and "slow" metabolisms, I don't think the science supports it. The differences are generally due to the amount of activity in the day and a person's fat/muscle ratio (hence women's lower cal need weight for weight, as we've got more fat than men of the same weight even when at our ideal weight). I don't think anyone has a magical ability to burn off calories regardless of their lifestyle.
That's true, I am a student and very sedentary whereas he has a full time job in retail so he is always on his feet. I think I have just been making excuses for myself so I've decided to try and walk for half an hour every day minimum and then work my way up. Thank you!!
