I found an article on this earlier and thought it might be of interest.
There was some controversy earlier in the week that the type of palm oil used, may be carcinogenic. As if palm oil wasn't controversial enough! That's a crazy amount of sugar too...

Thanks for posting this. With pancake day it far away my OH asked if we would still have pancakes. I said yes but said I didn't think I would be having choc spread - now I can see why. I will stick to banana with my pancake and tell myself it's a fruit portion.
Oh my gosh. No wonder I like it so much! And Nutella has a sort of "healthy chocolate spread" reputation!
Nutella marketing department is either run by delusional people or they are actually brilliant and should be running the country! The mere fact that this is a sugar filled product should make people tread a wide path around it. Even without the Palm Oil it's not good for you however you try to dress it up! And I recently saw a Facebook post about "Nutella Squares" - now this might have been a joke, but it looked like even less effort was going to be made to make yourself an unhealthy snack! Yes, it tastes nice, but that's because it's stuffed with sugar. Avoid it like the plague.
I think it can be eaten as an occasional treat, much like you would eat a chocolate brownie etc. But I agree, their marketing department is very clever the way they dress it up.
I suppose it's true, you are basically leaving the lactose, which is just another type of sugar. But then the jar contains the equivalent calcium as a glass of milk - so that makes it healthy, right? Or so they tell us!
Hubby and I used to just have sugar and lemon on our pancakes. Then we went to a Christmas Market in Germany and tried crepes with sugar and cinnamon. Instant converts!
Don't forget you can use the likes of canderel or similar sweeteners, instead of proper sugar. They still would be better. I don't even have proper sugar in my house now so even my hubby can't make anything with it to get me.
I'm not a big fan of artificial sweeteners... I've kinda bought into the negative press over the years. I sometimes use pure maple syrup as an alternative, which does go well on pancakes!
I put tiny bits of dark choc on my pancakes too as I'm dairy intolerant and the dairy free nutella alternatives all look pretty unhealthy, all super high in sugar too. Have considered adding ground hazelnuts, hazelnut butter sounds fab
Well there's more than one type of flour though - spelt flour works well enough, and it's slightly slower burning. There's not a huge problem if you only eat this sort of thing occasionally.
I have seen recipes for carb free cottage cheese based pancakes, but I'm not brave enough to try that!
As my eldest son has amongst others also got a hazelnut allergy, we don't ever buy it anyway.
When I grew up my mum wouldn't buy it, granny did when on holidays with us.
This might sound disgusting, but as kids we used to mix nesquick type cocoa powder into butter and use that as chocolate spread on toast - looking at the ingredients I know which one I would prefer even now 😅
I don't eat it anymore but have made it for my son a few times when he wanted nutella.
Hahaha, we used to try all sorts of concoctions as mum wouldn't buy 'trendy' food 😉 My brother and I used to have kitchen 'dares'. Mix up a lots of dry and wet ingredients, and the other would have to drink some -😝 ergh, not some of my fondest childhood memories 😂 it could be curry powder, tabaso, lemon juice, jam, herbs ketchup,... yum - not!!!
That's a really good idea, I have always hated plain chocolate but after starting my paleo diet I have found my taste buds have changed. When I tried milk choc at Xmas it was way too sweet. Thanks for the idea - I bet I will like it!
