Any ideas for kale?

I don't like the taste of kale much but it seems to be a 'super food' - any ideas for recipes where it is disguised a bit?

Thanks!

EllaMidlands the recipe below this is one of my favourite meals - mind I like kale ;) I have a garden full of the stuff - about 10 different varieties (the curly ones tend to be very strong - perhaps try a variety with a flatter leaf - one of the Italian varieities - they are more mild).

OMG - is there more than one type of kale?? I wondered why it was called curly kale as i had never seen any other kind. I will look out for other kinds particularly if they are less strong. Thanks!

Should have mentioned although you might not be able to buy them in the shops. Collard greens - as easy to grow as kale but more mild in flavour.

I'm told if you don't like sprouts, you don't like kale which is me exactly. My guinea pig likes kale, never tried him on sprouts.🐹

Do you like spinach? It comes a very close second to kale...found this article:

I like it stir fried with soy sauce, adding any other veggies and prawns, beef or chickpeas. Trouble is, as I get it from the supermarket, it's a massive bag!

I tried juicing kale once with some other stiff but the taste was overpowering and it was yuk... I do like sprouts & spinach but it seems i dont like Kale... Good luck with finding a recipe to disguise the taste as it is supposed to be very.good for you !

I use cavolo Nero (black kale) which I find nicer. Salted and baked makes lovely crunchy kale chips. Or throw into a stir fry. I've also heard that kale pesto (throw in kale cooked in water, toasted nuts, garlic, basil and a little Parmesan into the food processor and it's done!) really want to try this with pasta or gnocchi!

in reply toprincessizzybee

I did something like this with spinach and cashew nuts, it seems you can make pesto out of most green leaf/nut/seed combinations, as long as you get the seasoning right :)

Coriander pesto on gnocchi is to die for - we use sunflower seeds in place of the pine nuts. Coriander/rocket is also a good combo in pesto.

With both kale and spinich I like to boil or steam for 5 mins, then drain and liquidize and add to whatever curry I'm making. It's a good way of increasing my consumption of dark greens. Only problem is resulting color can take a bit of getting used to :)

Try spinach or sprouts instead or broccoli. If you don't like it, there will be another green food you will like. Spinach stir fried with onions, and then diced paneer ( Indian cheese ) added or mushrooms or both as paneer does have calories unless eating dish without carbs or less carbs like a whole meal pitta.

I like kale roasted in hot oven.. v healthy snack bit like crispy seaweed! Spread out on baking tray but spray oil salt n spices of your choice on.. toss it make sure spread out on tray and roast til crispy. Mmm

I find the stalk bit of kale too stringy so I cut it out and just cook with the leaves instead. Add into other things e.g. stir fry, bubble and squeak, veg curry. I prefer spinach and chard though. Especially rainbow chard, the stalks are sweet, can just eat it on its own. Leeks are also really good for you. In fact any vegetable with a strong green or purple colour is going to be high in minerals :)

Hi I love kale and we grow it in the garden. I prefer it in soup, fry a chopped onion for a minute (low heat) add in diced sweet potato, fry for a further 5 mins. Add two chopped tomatoes 2 mins; a veg stock (in about a litre boiling water - I don't like the soup too thin). Then chop or tear about 5 or 6 leaves of kale, add to soup and season well. I also add a little chilli flakes, paprika, bay leaves, thyme and any other herbs I can get a hold of. Kale can take spicing up a bit. Simmer for 20 mins, blend and eat! It will keep in the fridge for a few days.
