I am hoping 2017 will be the next step for me. I have been going to the gym I started Jan 2016 and I love it, I go about 3 to 4 times a week believe it or not, but going to the gym will not help me to lose weight. I need to look at my diet now and so I am joining this to get some support I hope. I am very over weight and to be honest I dislike it a lot but I feel hopeless when it comes to losing it. I believe I can do this with some people to talk to.

Hi. Great that you go to the gym regularly. I am trying things the other way round. I have lost over a stone with the help of the 12 week plan and this forum. So my next move is to rejoin the gym in the New Year to boost my weight loss. Either way it is going to work for both you and I as we plan to move 'onwards and downwards' with our health. Good luck.
Well done on the exercise. Whatever your weight, you will get a real benefit from going 4 times a week, so do';t just see it as a weight loss tool, but as an overall health aid as well.
You will find that exercise alone won't shift significant weight. Portion control is at least 90% of weight loss, in my opinion, with exercise maybe adding a little cherry to the top of the weight loss cake (to use an unfortunate metaphor!).
I went down from 11stone 3lbs to 8stone 10lbs in my 40s without a lot of trouble by being very firm with my portions and going to the gym 4 times a week. I found that if I did the diet and not the gym, I lost about 1-1.5lbs a week, if did the gym but not the diet, I usually stood still, but if I did both the diet and 4 gym trips a week, I lost around 2lbs a week. I thought that for my age and with not a lot to lose, this was a marvellous result. So it is really worth tackling your weight loss regime with both diet and exercise.
