Night hunger

Dear friends,

I always get so hungry in the night at about midnight. I believe eating late is not health but this hunger makes me fail to sleep. Does Any one knows the causes and how I can work on it? Cheers

I was up at 4am, having woken with a stiff neck, having a Vanilla Chai Tea and a rice-cake! A bit better than the previous night.... when I had two teacakes and jam (might go towards explaining my weight gain this week instead of a loss).

Night eating is a real danger because no-one can see you, you pretend it didn't happen, only the scales eventually make you face up to it!

Answer is in preparation...have a banana or hot drink before bed. Have a sugar-free jelly and soothing teas available for emergencies. Sort out bedding so not too hot or too cold and make sure pillows are comfy.

Maybe have painkillers & water to hand so you don't need to wander into the kitchen (in my case) if you wake up due to aches and pains!

This is getting a bit of a habit with me but I either imagine it or I am often hungry at bedtime, though I seldom wake up hungry in the night. I have a little snack box of raisins, or some of it. The sugar rush stops the hunger and with luck you'll get to sleep before hunger kicks in.

I wonder whether adding some good carbs to your evening meal would help. Like brown rice or quinoa? So that your tummy is full when you go to bed.

Hiya, i also get hungry in the night, i think its due low blood sugar. Do you get low blood sugar in the day ie, get shaky, light headed, overwhelming urge to eat stodge?

with me i get very hungry about 3am. i find it helps to have a good dinner quite late (7pm) then a small snack with protein before bed, such as a slice of turkey on an oatcake or two. plus ive given up trying NOT to eat at 3am, so i try to allocate 250 cals for it. sometimes i can get away with just a banana or an apple, but mostly i need another couple oatcakes and something on them, and a glass of water.

Make sure you are warm enough now that it is getting cooler. A hot water bottle is comforting too. I got very hungry at night at the beginning of the 12 week plan, in fact the noise woke hubby!! A drink was enough as it gave my tummy some thing to work on. Xx

Try to retain some calories for a bedtime snack. preferably high protein. A chocolate drink made with choc whey protein powder is satisfying ...about 90 cals a scoop. Or mix some into Greek yoghurt as a late 'dessert' . Holland & Barrett sell several brands.
