I have found this site while I was searching for (free) ways of losing weight and this seemed the most genuine one out of all of them. I have been putting on weight like mad in the past 2 years due to my thyroid condition - but I am on tablets now and all the blood works seem fine so I thought I would give it another go. I was on a liquid diet for 3 weeks this year and "only" lost 2kg - that got me so frustrated (because other people would lose so much more, I know now that the liquid diet wasn't the solution) so I stopped again. Last week at the doctors I had to weigh myself and saw the shocking 90kg. I am very unhappy with myself, my bones hurt due to the weight (only 5'3) and I have no confidence at all. I am out more at the moment, I walk a lot thanks to Pokemon Go (I know it seems crazy, but my partner palys it with me and we have our evening route we're walking most evenings). I am currently doing distance learning and I am home most of the time. I definitely enjoy zumba but I get very unhappy with myself once I do a DVD but can absolutely not keep up with it. Everyone around me seems to be losing so much weight lately and here's me - the one that just won't. I know my thyroid is the cause for most of it - but I would so love to start seeing some change in my health - my blood pressure getting better, less pain in back, feet etc.
I will try to set my goals for 5kg at a time - does that seem okay or is it too much? I stopped to set any certain dates or months for losing the weight in - it is just too frustrating when you don't lose the weight and you stop again.
Sorry for the very long story here - I just felt like venting to people who understand me.
Regards,
Isabelle

Welcome to the NHS Weight Loss Forum. It's a very friendly, encouraging and helpful site, where we are all on the same journey to health.
If you haven't already, please read the Welcome Newbies post. It's in the Pinned Posts section, to the right of your screen, (bottom if you're on a mobile). It has a link to the NHS 12 week plan, which is a great place to start. It doesn't give a specific diet plan, but gives guidelines for healthy eating. Also take a look at the Topics section beneath that, for posts that could answer any questions you may have. You may also like to check out how many calories you should have each day using the BMI checker.
Perhaps consider joining in our challenges, they're fun to do and help with motivation.
Join us for the Monday Group weigh-in. If you 'follow' Lowcal and moreless (our very approachable site Admins), you'll be notified when they post the threads. The latest weigh-in thread can always be found in the Events section, to the right of the home page. The weigh in is entirely voluntary, but I find it helps keep me accountable.
Be active on the forum, as that's where we exchange ideas and get our daily dose of motivation and inspiration. 😄
Enjoy the forum, and I wish you success with your goals.
You are welcome. By the way, its very useful to set small goals like 5kg, that's a good idea. We also have the incentive in that you can ask for a badge (if you want one), I think the first is a 'Newbie' badge, then you can get them when you get to milestones of loss e.g. 5kg, or a healthy BMI, etc. That's something else to aim for
Something else we suggest is that you take your measurements. Sometimes when the scales don't show any change, you may find you have lost inches anyway.
Thank you for the information, Mouse. I just had a good look around but can't find the BMI or where can I get those badges - have you maybe got a link for me?
Thank you so much for your help - I will be happy to stick around in the forum, I'm sure it's great motivation to talk to people who know what you're going through.
I suggest you join the Monday weigh-in thread. It doesn't matter when you weigh yourself (usually the same time each week so you get a true loss or gain for the week), you can reply to the post - take a look and see what others do. This is the link for the afternoon post (the am one has closed). The afternoon post is open until 6pm on Friday.
Nice username! I am glad you have found us, we're a really friendly bunch and will always do our best to help you. I know very slow weight loss can be very frustrating but hopefully you'll find a lot of good advice here; you're certainly not the only one that has the condition you describe, I have read a few peoples' posts with the same concerns and frustrations but they find ways and slowly but surely, they get there.
Thank you, Sazkia! From what I read so far I can only confirm that people here seem to be very friendly. I am happy about that it's so hard without people around you who understand you fully or where to go when you are having a bad day. I hope I will stick to losing weight - It would do me so good
I'm one of the many on this site with hypothyroidism, not surprising really there are so many of us when there is such a strong link with weight gain. St my heaviest last December I was 93kg and at a little over 5'2 I know what you mean about your bones hurting, I used to be kept awake at night with the pain in my knees.
Since December I've lost nearly 2 stone through medication and in the last few months being more careful about what I eat and trying to become more active. Losing weight can be a challenge with a thyroid problem, and my weight frequently goes up and down by a few pounds, but it's the general downward trend that's important.
Good luck with the med, you should start to see all your symptoms reducing over the next few months and losing weight will also help with the aches and pains. By Christmas you'll hopefully be feeling back to your old self.
thank you for your comment. It is very nice to hear that from someone who experienced the exact same as I did. I hope I will see some improvement soon I did so much research on how a thyroid problem is connected with your weight and then I decided to see a doctor about it and it was diagnosed.
It's very inspiring - 2stone! I hope I will be there at some point, well done!
I would definitely do more exercising if it wasn't for my bones hurting all the time that's why I switched to a lot of walking for the beginning, it's quite easy to keep up with.
A thought. Have you had thyroid levels and meds reviewed? There is apparently no great consensus on what healthy levels are. And it's a condition that underpins a lot of health.
You've been given so much wonderful information and advice, there's little for me to add, but if you'd like a newbie badge to start you off, I'd love to give you one
I hope you'll be successful with all your weightloss goals and will enjoy being a member of this community as much as we do
Heya, welcome! I also have a chronic health condition (fibromyalgia) which makes weight loss slow, due to being unable to exercise. But im starting to accept it now, and just keep going. Slow weightloss is much better for your health than maintaining and def gaining!
Hi Sweetinfinity. Just wanted to say that I suffer from thyroid condition too but have just managed to lose 2 stone in about 6 months so it can be done. Stick with it - some weeks you will lose and some you won't but as long as you have a downward trend you will get there in the end. This forum is so fantastic and if you can join everyone with the monday weigh in as it gives you great support and motivation. Best of luck
Thank you for your kind and motivating words, everyone!
I do have another appointment with the GP in 2 weeks to discuss blood results and see if my thyroid is okay. I have quit smoking (smoked for nearly 10 years) and try to keep fit. I hope I will start to feel better soon, I definitely don't like feeling tired and stressed all the time - it will be so nice with a little less on my ribs as well! I installed a step tracker app on my phone and try to walk as much as I can for now - I am at 6000 Steps at the moment and would love to do at least 10000 a day.
