I'm just me

I am a 30 year old mom of one who is here to try and lose weight and ultimately become more healthy and happy with myself. I have PCOS (diagnosed at 15) and this gives me a variety of troubles including weight issues. I am over 10 stone overweight (according to NHS) but I've always been obese. Had hormonal issues as a child and I developed a very negative relationship with my body. The past year I have been dealing with my emotional issues and now feel ready to tackle the physical restraints of my body. I have tried a fair few fad diets etc but am trying to get back to basics, set habits and trends for the rest of my life. I want to slim down and feel healthy so I can be a better mom and partner but mainly to have a better standard of life. I know I have this in me.

If anything sounds familiar then please add me on here and lets keep each other going!

Hi and welcome Crimson85j :)

I had 9st to lose when I first started my journey, but only 3st left now :) I don't have PCOS, but I understand that weight loss may significantly help your symptoms, so a win win situation :)

Have a look at the Pinned Posts section, to the right of your screen, (bottom if you're on a mobile) and read our Welcome Newbie post. It has a link to the NHS 12 week plan, which is a great place to start. It doesn't give a specific diet plan, but gives guidelines for healthy eating.

Consider signing up for any, or all of our challenges, as they're fun and motivating.

We also have a monday group weigh-in and if you click follow on my profile, you'll get a notification when I post it on monday. You can have a look at the latest thread in the events section, to the right of the home page.

Be active on the forum, as that's where we meet to exchange ideas and get our daily fix of inspiration and motivation :)

Wishing you all the very best :)

There is a strong sense of "I can do this" coming through in your post, and that is the most necessary part of getting fit and healthy. Take it gently, one day at a time. Plan ahead, shop wisely and keep your mind busy so you are not driven to comfort eat. It takes time to change the habits of a lifetime, but it can be done...... once you decide to do it.

You do have it in you Crimson85j and just writing your very heartfelt post proves how much you want to achieve your goals.

As already mentioned the nhs12wk plan is a fantastic platform to get good advice on how to change for life ... it's not a diet 😀 but changes of habits that you can carry forward for life. Be truthful with your calories, eat within your allowance, tweek your existing meals, eat wholemeal pasta, bread etc, drink plenty of water, eat lower sugar and fat and move a little more. You will soon see the inches and the weight come off 🏃

I've recently hit my 2stone goal using the plan and this forum so you can do it too 💖

Have small goals to start with as it takes time, patience, willpower and a bit of self belief to carry on to your ultimate weight loss target.

Join in with the forum and it's challenges as it is really motivating and can say I wouldn't of achieved my weight loss with out it 💗

Good luck and look forward to seeing your journey.

Hey Crimson85

I also struggled with PCOS since last 8 years. Its a horrible feeling. You dont get your periods for months.,start getting facial hair.It takes a toll on the mind as well.

Exercises, some stupid diets kept following.Nothing helped.

The only way to tackle this is to lead a holistic life. Im sure you are a wonderful mother.(Conceiving...another big issue with PCOS.Glad you found success in that area). But give yourself importance.Try eating till 8 pm.Eat at regular intervals and sleep at the right time.

1)Right food at right time

2) Sleeping at the right time

3) Exercise

4)Stay stress free & happy

And understand you need to make a commitment to yourself for life.It is not just to get to a particular weight. But remaining healthy for your entire lifetime. It is about lifestyle changes.

All the best darling. And btw you and your daughter are really pretty. :-)

Hi I have PCOS too. I didn't realise that may have been a contributor to my weight gain until I was diagnosed in 2009.

It caused me to have horrendously painful and debilitating periods which meant for the first day of every cycle (which were roughly every 5-6 weeks) I was so ill, I couldn't even get out of bed.

After 5 years of trying to conceive my eldest child, they told me the PCOS was the cause of my problems and put me on Metformin. I got pregnant within three months. It's quite hard to get pregnant when you don't know when you're ovulating 😄

I've managed to lose roughly 5 stone since 2013 and had another child in between. So I would say your chances of losing weight are just as good as anyone else, but you do have to be disciplined.

Thankfully since having my kids, my periods are normal.

I'm now 4lb within the healthy weight range, trying to lose the last annoying stone 😉

Everyone on this forum is amazing and some have more than you to lose, so don't be put off. Just take baby steps and you will get there.

Good luck 😊

The 12 week plan is a good place to start. For many PCOS sufferers, getting their glucose/insulin balance under control can make a lot of difference. Sometimes it takes medication, but you may get the same results by being very careful with your carbohydrate foods, choosing low GI, high fibre, but not having too much of them. Sometimes people need to cut out dairy as well.

Perhaps have a look at "The Blood Sugar Diet" by Michael Mosley? It explains how to control your insulin levels. Good luck.

You can use the little search box top right to find other posts about PCOS. There is also a PCOS forum on HU, if you haven't found it already.

I'm loving your positive "I'm going to do this" attitude Crimson85j with that attitude, you're half way there :)

I was diagnosed with PCOS when I was a teenager, and two years ago, with ceoliac disease. It does make losing weight harder, but I started on my 'new life' plan last October with 3 stone to lose. I've lost 2 stone (slow and steady wins the race!). The 12 week plan was so easy to follow and using the My Fitness App to count the calories. I allow myself the occasional treat and I believe that helps mentally so I don't feel like I'm going without and I tell myself that I'm not on a diet, but heading towards a new healthy me. I also did the Couch25K, having never been sporty, I never thought for a second that I could do any running at all, so felt the most overwhelming sense of achievement, but any exercise at all, gets the adrenaline pumping and you feel so much better for it. Start gently and work your way up and reward yourself when you hits your targets, a new piece of jewellery, a different haircut etc.

Good luck and we're all here to hear your achievements and help you through the tough days :)

All the best for success on your journey! As you're only 30, it is really worth knuckling down and getting the job done. You could get rid of all 10 surplus stones by the time you're 32, which is really worth aiming at.

I think to start with, make basic changes like cutting out sugary snacks and crisps, avoid alocohol, don't snack. Instead make sure you have decent meals which fill you up. Eat at least 5 portions of veg a day - 2 with your lunch and 3 with your dinner. This really fills you up and doesn't contain many calories.

When you first start, and with 10 stone to lose, you can lose quite a lot by making these changes, and then you can gradually become more careful and strict (eg weighing everything out and counting every calorie), as your weight goes down.

Also, try to get more active - stand instead of sit, do a few arm exercises in front of the telly, walk places as often as you can, keep active around the house, go up and down the stairs, and then build up to more formal exercise as you get slimmer and fitter.

It's worth remembering that losing weight is about 90% what you (don't) eat, and only about 10% how active you are. But being active is good for your health apart from weight loss.

I hope it all goes well - start now and don't stop until the job is done!
