Hi searching through the local weight loss information I came across this site, summer is here and once again here I am needing to lose 5 stone to be a "normal weight" which I haven't been for 30 odd years. I am now feeling so alone and under confident to go to a slimming club as I have a big amount to lose I wondered if there was anyone local who has successfully started on their weight loss and can give me some good advice. I have spent so much time and still do looking after others that I realise I have badly neglected myself and if I don't help myself now I probably never will. It is so hard to pick yourself up when there is so much negativity around you just posting this today is a major step, so please I would love to hear any of your self help tips and stories of success.

Thankyou Moorless for your reply I looked on the links you sent and your words actually brought tears to my eyes. I too have not gone to the doctors because I feel so ashamed of putting so much weight on, I have even not gone to the yearly check because f this weight issue I think this is because I went a number of years ago and all the doctor said was "less sugar and 5 a day dear" I felt so stupid I never went back. I know if I can talk to others in the same position I stand a good chance of succeeding. I too find my joints ache and I get out of breath walking too fast ( I am nearly 56) so I should start gentle walking first I guess, the dogs won't know what's hit them. Huge congratulations on your success you have made such a massive difference to your life I look forward to the same. Thanks again
Hi Itsbab and welcome to the forum!
I haven't been here long myself, but I've found that everybody here is very friendly, helpful, positive, and willing to give you that boost up that everybody needs sometimes.
I started the NHS 12-week plan from the NHS Choices website in early/mid January. Like you, I found that I didn't like what I saw and needed to do something about it. The trouble was, I wasn't sure where to start. I like the NHS plan because it's free (!) and something I can do without the time commitment of having to attend meetings.
So far, it's going really well and I can highly recommend it. I'm 5'7" and I was 15 stone in January and, as of the Monday weigh in, am now 12 1/2 stone. I really like that it's a plan for a healthy lifestyle and not just a diet. I don't believe in diets and don't think they can work. I needed something to change the way I thought about my health. This fits the bill for me.
Once I'd gotten through the 12-week plan, I signed up on here for the extra support and started with the 12 week plan again. Which puts me on week 19 I think. I still have another 2 1/2 stone to go to get to where I want, but I don't necessarily look at it that way. Small goals break up the task and make it seem much less daunting. There are also some really fun challenges here on the forum to help you get motivated, if you're interested in joining in.
Good luck on your way and I'm sure that in no time at all you'll be well on the way to success.
Thankyou so much I can't believe the messages of support that I have had in only a couple of hours I think that I will be able to motivate myself especially knowing that you are not alone and others can give some good ideas Congratulations on your weight loss and I think you are right it is not a diet it is a change of eating for life thanks so much hope you keep on track.
Hi and welcome
I too haven't been here long myself, but have found the support from everyone on here incredibly overwhelming and encouraging.
I'm 5ft 9, 19st 9.6lbs and have 7 and a half stone to lose. I've already lost 9.2lbs in my first week by following the 12 week plan
I echo Moreless about "be active on the forum and join in the community activities "
It's such a wonderful community to be apart of
Good luck with your journey.
9lbs in your first week fantastic you should be so proud of yourself hope you keep on losing and feeling positive I thank you for your quick reply and am so pleased I signed up for this it's good to know that there are other people in the same boat hopefully I too will be able to give positive advice to others as my journey progresses thanks again
Hi Itsbab, I can totally relate to your post. I have 3 kids and a wife who I have run after all of my life. I cook different meals for them all at different times of the day, I clean, I hand out cash and they always have priority over me. It was difficult for me to start dieting because I was the only one in my family who really needed to lose weight. While the family tucked into a Chinese or takeaway I would be counting calories and having a healthy meal. It was hard and I didn't feel as though I had their support. My situation now is that I have 16 stone (that's not a typo) to lose. I feel terrible but if I do nothing about it then those feelings are only going to get worse and my life span will be seriously shortened. I have a choice, stick or twist. I'm not much of a dancer but I'm going to throw everything into this because once the weight comes off, and I've lost it twice before, then I change. I feel good about myself. Simple things that people take for granted like having a bath without that big dam of water behind you that floods down each side of you when you lean back, or buying clothes out of a normal shop rather than looking for 6xl. It's worth it Itsbab, I promise you. Going to a slimming club is daunting, I can tell you, I was the only male amongst 50 females at my class, but you know what, we were all fighting the same battle. Nobody judged me, nobody shouted derogatory comments at me, nobody laughed. It really is worth giving it a go because as you step on those scales week after week and see the weight come off you are going to feel fantastic. You have fantastic support here on this forum but I'd recommend going to a class too. Keep us updated on your journey. I have a tattoo that reads, Aldri gi opp. The translation provides a constant reminder to me to 'Never give up'.
Thanks so much for your reply, how much have you lost already? I know what you mean by lack of support at home, there is only me fighting this battle in our family I have asked my husband for help so much but as soon as I get ratty it's anything for an easy life. I have spent so much time sorting others problems out yet no one helps me when I need it, because I gave up my job (my mum has altzheimers) and my husband early MS I find it hard to stop feeling down but hopefully when the weight starts to drop off I can start to go swimming again (haven't done that for a while) and you never know I may find the confidence to move into another direction in life like apply for a job again! You sound like such a positive person and a strong one to boot there is only one way you can go and that is down (weight wise of course) I am so glad I found this site it's people like you who make the difference. Keep up the brilliant work and try to let others run around after you a little sounds like you deserve it. congratulations on your success so far AMAZING and thanks for your comments.
