Hello Lindaps
I feel for you 😕 I have chronic arthritis and a year ago could barely walk 😕 Minor surgery helped, but realisation that I was only going to get worse Made me completely change my attitude. It's MY body, there are mzny things I cannot do but I force myself to focus on what I CAN do. The first was eating less, (calorie counting works for me) and then moving more. Not running a marathon, just 10 minutes twice a day, more than I had been doing 😕 I do either chair based workout, a mini cycle machine, or when I can, swimming. in the evenings I stand and stretch or do some flexibility exercises. I have recently started yoga also. I am now two stone lighter and can manage most walking without any sticks. I can even manage a but of dancing, my favourite pastime 😊😊😊. Good luck and very best wishes
Wow that's brilliant , I'm also suffering so have trouble doing exercises , calorie counting works for me also just had a lovely meal I will put piccie on in a moment xxxxxx
Me too it's a pain in every way, especially if you look relatively normal, you also get a complex about people thinking lazy and fat. I decided, as Anna61 says, calorie counting, no carbs, lots of veg, some protein and fruit. I take a PPI so I know my tummy is protected. I need to get enough weight off fast enough to start increasing movement. I am lucky I have a big treadmill with a cushioned, flex effect like walking on thick grass, it stops some impact. Again like Anne61 have also started doing 2 minutes of static dancing, looks a bit mad but it's to work on my aerobic and core strength, I do 2min then a 1 min sit down and stretch, then repeat. Best song I have found so far is I feel love by donna summer, just makes you shake that booty ;). My calories are simple carb free and I am eating more than normal, 3 times a day with lots of fruit, veg (eg pickled beetroot and cauliflower, tuna for lunch), mainly fruit inc banana for breakfast and meat or fish and as much veg as I can eat at Dinner, 600-700 cal per day. Sugar free jellies for treats As of today, day 13, I have lost 11lb and more significantly inches from all over. Already in clothes I wore 2 years ago again and although the joints and lower back etc, (especially my neck and shoulders) are making me suffer abit, it's good to feel I am actually going somewhere fast
Very good luck to you, you can do it
Hi Lindaps,
Welcome to the forum. I can see that people have already given you some really good responses, and advice regarding weight loss and limited mobility. I also wanted to give you the link to the 'Welcome Newbie' post, which a lovely member called Moreless has put together:
healthunlocked.com/nhsweigh...
We have weekly weigh-in group sessions on Mondays - you can see the latest link to that in the 'Events' section of the homepage (right-hand-side of the homepage), so if you like the idea of a weekly weigh-in, I hope you'll join us.
Wishing you a great week.

I have limited movement after a stroke and spinal problems. I have lost 12lbs in 8 months. Cutting down on calories, eating more fruit and veg, no sugar or foods with sugars in.and yogurts low in fat and sugar. I do my exercises lying on my bed for 20 minutes a day, I have to lose 2 and a half stone as I am still at the top end of overweight. I love this forum and the encouragement you give each other.
Hi, I am not responding to you with any bright suggestions, I am afraid, but thought I would say to you, that I am in the shames predicament. I also need to lose weight, especially having just found out that I am diabetic (type2) . I have osteo arthritis, have had both knees replaced, two unsuccessful shoulder ops as well as having several things wrong including arthritis, at the base of my spine. Hence walking is difficult. I shall soon be going out as I try todo a walk every day, regardless of the distance. Start on very short walks, lengthening them as you are able. This is working for me as I hope it will for you. Hi Lindaps,
I have really struggled the last couple of years with walking issues. But it didn't stop me getting to goal (minus 5 stone) and hovering within my healthy BMI for a year. Sweetheart has a 30 year chronic back condition. The thinking on backs has totally changed according to an interesting programme I listened to on the BBC recently. They used to tell you to rest on a board. Now they tell you to keep as mobile as you can.
Have you had any physiotherapist advice? Really valuable as they will prescribe exercise which is fitted to you and tell you how long to do it for. My last joint operation recovered fully on just 5-10 minutes a day. At least to the point where I could go further. They then referred me to an NHS scheme at the gym, where I went with all the other old crocks and learned to use all the equipment.
If you think that is beyond you. How about swimming? If that isn't something you would do, think of going to the pool and just walking up and down in the water, as it supports your body and puts less pressure on you. When I used to go to the adult swims in the morning at my local pool, there were always a couple of friends doing this in the slow lane, chatting away as they went.
You can take tiny walks. Always remember that you have to come back from your destination. My Dad, after his stroke, used to go to the nearest pub for lunch. Then he got as far as the cafe, for breakfast. Then to the post office, back to the cafe for a rest and a coffee then home. Maybe there are some garden walls, you could have a little sit on while you rest before coming back.
Food: I have to do something similar. I just have my meals at tablet time. I don't think eating with medication has to be the three full courses, just a little snack will do, like a banana, or half a slice of bread, maybe a drink, if you take milk, or a yogurt.
I think the changes you are seeking are all about attitude, or it is for me. I have shocked myself recently by monitoring my steps on an app. Most days I was looking at 300 or less. This shocked me because I know we need 5,000 for normal health and 10,000 would be better. Yesterday I managed 11,000 for the first time in months. It was just a walk to a lunch out, back home and then walking into town for the pictures, a drink and a walk back. I found my feet were a bit tender by the end, even though I had changed shoes midway. Sweetheart's feet were tender too and he was flagging by the end as his back was sore. But I notice he is bouncier this morning and my mood has lifted. So it does work. Off to find yet another pair of shoes now and switch the app on.
Dieting and mobility are all about taking little steps, until one day you find you have done it and you are now where you want to be. I know I have to get back on the exercise plan as it will help my current conditions but step by step, literally.
Who knows, one day our slim selves might meet on a walking excursion! Here's hoping and good luck with your plans
