It's another name for the High Fat, Low Carb diet. It can work well for some people but if you cut out all carbs it can make you feel like rubbish. Cutting out carbs means that your body has to use fat for energy

It's scientific name is the ketogenic diet and it's usually recommended for people with metabolic syndrome (type 2 diabetes, obesity, etc).

You need to get it right, otherwise you will just pile the weight on.

Hi there !

I wouldn't recommend cutting out carbs or going Keto radically, but cutting down on carbs gradually and making veg & legumes the base of most meals is a great way to retrain your body and your mind. We eat far too many carbs anyway, we should get our carbohydrate and starch from fruit and veg, rather than empty starches like rice, wheat and pasta...

Also, from personal experience, high natural fat diets are a lot more satisfying as you can still enjoy tasty food like butter, cheese, avocado and good oils.

I heard about that diet and the side effects are not pleasant. This is what I do not like about it. There is one called "diet doctor" or something. It is a commercial diet business where you have to pay a membership I believe. This diet has been aggressively promoted and one of the best reason to be weary of it. There are a lot of diets around and you just have to be careful and see the motivation behind it. (Of the commercial ones)

Personally I have cut down a bit on my carb intake. I do have some fat but in moderation.

My opinion is : check the side effects list for high fat no carb diet from another website than the diet businesses so as to get a more unbiasedt opinion.

So glad you posted this! I have been saying this for years. I'm T2 diabetic (in good control) and I have cut back on my carbs and although my weightloss is slow, it suits me! I can't go high fat because of other issues so I try to eat low/med fat with an occasional high fat treat (which I can suffer because of later!).

We make far too much emphasis on dieting, it should be healthy eating and eating when hungry and stop when satisfied (not bloated and full!). I drink a glass of water if I feel hungry because most of the time I'm just thirsty.

Yes, LCHF works for some and yes sometimes its recommended for diabetics, but we are all different and we shouldn't push what works for us on others. I was vilified on another weightloss forum for daring to say that LCHF isn't necessarily the best "diet" for everyone.

dietdoctor.com is not a commercial diet, the membership fee is tiny and more than worth it for the vast amount of evidence based information. There is no commercial influence, Ie no sponsorship by food companies.

I've been following this way of eating for 8 months now and have lost nearly 4 stone without feeling hunger or missing any processed foods. I would encourage any one to at least read about it and try it if it appeals.

Just for clarity so people can take a look and make their own mind up, the dietdoctor website (lchf) has at least half of its content with all the basic information free to anyone, for those that want to see more videos and lectures they can pay a membership to see them. It isn't a commercial diet, in fact it's not a diet at all, it's a way of eating that has helped a lot of diabetics and others have also lost weight. It's certainly not for everyone, I have tried LCHF but found very low carb didn't suit me, however I've had some definite health benefits with eating lowER carb than I did before. There is quite a bit of recent reliable research to support the LCHF so I think it would be fairer to call it an alternative way of eating rather than a fad diet. What works for one person doesn't suit another, so it makes sense to be open to trying something but if it doesn't work for you there's always calorie counting to fall back on β˜€οΈ

I don't know why we are always looking for wacky diets. The way to go is a healthy balanced diet cutting out processed foods for the main part.

Find out what your own body responds to, mine loses weight best when I keep the carbs down and stick with it

Well I am doing my own fat only in fish and very lean meat diet, in moderation with veg. 600-700 cal per day and although I only started on monday I am down at least 3lb. I have done all the other diets on the planet including the fat diet, the atkins, the cambridge diet, the cabbage diet, the banana and cottage cheese diet. I have taken every known slimming tablet, done private clinics done GP guided using a now banned drug called Adifax which causes narcolepsy and damaged heart valves. You name it! I am not a big eater, don't snack, often don't eat anything because I feel ill, still the weight goes on the moment I just eat healthy.

This is the first time ever I have actually lost weight in the first week, let alone the first days. My normal lose is about 2lb per month and that was always with exercise such as 5 miles on the treadmill 3-4 times a week. Now I can't do aerobic exercise or endurance. I sat down with pen and paper and worked out exactly which foods I actually needed, even using the slightly blood glucose lifting properties of Xylatol.

Fingers crossed it keeps coming off as I have a lot to lose, again.

I also did a lot of diets TheHud. πŸ™€

I did the Atkins diet once. I remember eating chicken with skin and all. No pleasure. Atkins actually died of a heart attack. I wonder why?

I did the Cabbage diet once. Smelled the whole house. Took me a couple of years to eat cabbage again. What I gained out of it was buying a big cooking pot which is now handy to cook Big Manna Crabs.

I also took some pills once which really were just an expensive laxative. It is a health no no. If you don't exercises certain muscles you could eventually end up wearing nappies for the rest of your life 😝😝😝

On a serious note I hope you do well in you weight loss journey.

I don't believe in any diet where you have to pay or buy something. People will say anything to get your money.

I don't believe in any diet which will make you unhappy or stroppy or aggressive towards other people.

It has to be a happy journey where you marvel at the new you. Everyday is a discovery.

😸

Oh I did more than laxatives, infact never tried them the IBD sorts that side out lol :( I first took amphetamines at 21 mixed with a duretic called lasix to get down for my wedding, doc monitored. I have since, apart from the Adifax, worked my way through all the prescription amphetamines, they do work but are a lot slower on me than for most people. I have also used the bio blockers, sida cordifolia, ephedrine, alli, and its stonger double dose fat blocker, waste of time for me because I rarely eat enough fat to make them useful, the list goes on.

My dieting started the moment I tried to get my size eight jeans on after 2 weeks immobile in hospital, both knees officially knackered. Aged only 20. Now at 53 and pretty ill I gave myself a break over the last year and ate healthy, new tablets help eating by taking away tummy pain but others tend to put the weight on by an average of 2 stone, I did just under 2 stone. Anyway having got back to basics, doing my diet this time. If all going well will increase my calories (more protein) next week and so on until I am still losing but slower.

It's all good fun...... Not! ;)

Good luck with your journey you sound just like me- years of yoyo dieting, it is getting ridiculous.

My mum has encouraged me to do this following her own success and I am on day 3 with 3.5lb loss which seems bizarre!

Onwards and downwards 😊

Thanks for your comments all. Just to reiterate I am not paying anyone anything or having to buy any new equipment and my mum has let me borrow her book which I constantly have my nose in. No unpleasant side effects to date but will see how things progress.

I have committed to doing this for 2 weeks and will be happy to get the muffin top down for my sister's wedding 😊

I once followed the Atkins diet which is very low carb and with lots of fats. I was happy eating it, so I followed it for a year. I did lose about 4-6lbs immediately but never lost any more. It did have effects which I didn't want. Bad breath for one. And I think it was taking me towards gout! So I gave it up. Lost weight happily with Weight Watchers, which is just an elaborate way of calorie counting, really, but I enjoy the support systems and have made lots of friends. Lost 5 stone over a long period. Learning to keep it off, now.

Yes I remember the bad breath and Aitkins diet. I did weight watchers too once. It worked, then I went on holiday. On my return, weight watchers had changed the point system and it just lost it's appeal. What was no points suddenly was one or two points.... I gave up.

Yes, I am still getting to grips with this year's updates! They have made sugar much worse points wise so it is affecting dairy in ways I find difficult to cope with. But I totally agree with what they've done so it is just a question of learning what to do. I think we all have our favourite healthy eating plans. Glad you've found yours now.

nhs2015 profile image
nhs2015β€’ in reply toVenusflytrap

I am on top of the world with my eating plan, Venusflytrap. I am so thankful, I never realised how bad my eating habits were. Sugar was the main culprit I think as well as portion sizes, disorganisation and not so much fish and veges.

I got a reality check with NHS. The funny part (not so funny really) hubby had numerous mini strokes, High blood pressure over 200, and Cancer. Since changing our lifestyle: no mini strokes, blood pressure 140 or less and yesterday was the final cancer check and he is cleared. Cleared, cleared cleared 😍. Hard to believe. He only needs checks every year now. He is really fit and happy, I am really fit and happy. All my sore joints have gone, my cholesterol has gone down to normal, I feel I am 20 again. I can run nearly 10k and am training for a specific run in July. My shape has changed, (bumps have gone or re-organised themselves). I can proudly wear my swimmer and also find I am much more relaxed, positive and Happy. I get the light in and music flowing. I still see through this forum, some people seem very tense and snappy, very much on the defensive and showing their aggressive side and I think life must not be too kind to them and their diet must affect them. It probably affects their mood. In my view food has a lot to answer for mood swings. Don't they say "we are what we eat?".

I have be given a new lease in life, I really love it and appreciate every minutes of it.

Here I go again... On my soap box....πŸ˜€ .... Can't help myself.... πŸ˜€Need to share my joy.....πŸ˜€πŸ˜€πŸ˜€πŸ˜€πŸ˜€

Have a great day Venusflytrap, success in your weight loss and enjoy life.πŸ’ƒπŸ»

Oh dear, what a way to go ! You are correct there concerned. I understand he had a history of heart attacks, congestive heart failure and hypertension. So this is probably one of the reason for his strong interest in creating his diet. And then falling on ice..... A bit unfair really.

I did not realise it first but his weight at death (from hospital record) was 258 pounds. This would not have helped him when he hit the ground.

Lesson to be learn : let's enjoy life. You just don't know what tomorrow will bring.
