Why are thin people not fat?

Some of you may have seen this already but I've just watched a BBC documentary on Youtube with this title.

Here is the link; youtube.com/watch?v=dAQr77Q...

It followed a group of naturally thin young people as they ate 5000 cals a day for a month. Interesting differences in results e.g. some people's bodies wouldn't let them eat that much and one turned the weight he gained into muscle rather than fat.

The programme covered pre-birth influences, variations in our reactions to food, our body's regulation of what it sees as our perfect weight and why we still feel hungry even when we have had sufficient cals. It even discussed a chicken virus which makes some people gain weight.... but it doesn't affect all overweight people so we can't all use that excuse..... dammit! :-)

Anyway I think it's worth a watch if you're interested....

Once again evidence that there is no 'one size fits all' solution to weight gain and loss

I noticed the documentary followed a group of young people, I was naturally slim & very often under weight for my ages until my mid - late twenties when I gained a lot of weight!! (Probably due to my metabolism slowing down) they should be encouraging slim people to still think about the food they eat rather then encouraging them to eat as much as possible!! I struggle to lose weight because I've never had to think about it, I've built up bad habits because I was young & slim!!

That's a good point although one of the interesting things to come out of the documentary is that people who are overweight as children and adolescents are more likely to be overweight as adults, in part due to the fact that they grow additional fat cells. I wonder if young slim people would listen to your argument as I think we all tend to see ourselves as bullet-proof when we are young! :-)

I know, wish someone had told me I wasn't invisible as a teenager.. Oh wait they did but thought I know better haha!!!

:( Woah. Rather disheartening. Some explanations but no solutions.
