We got the keys for a new place yesterday and started on cleaning, decorating and gardening etc. Waiting in for both the electric and gas companies in a freezing cold bungalow I succumbed to temptation and got my lunch from the local chippy! I "justified" it by telling myself it would warm me up. I was shattered at the end of a long day and could not wait to get to bed. Any tips for keeping my energy levels up whilst spending all day cleaning/decorating in a house with no cooker or fridge/ I am worried that I could undo the good work I have done so far. :-( John

Bananas and mixed nuts for energy and a flask of homemade soup to warm you up.. :)

Hi John,

I hope you're coping so far with all that cleaning, decorating and gardening in your new place. I can understand you turning to the chippy when you were freezing waiting for the electric and gas companies. It would have definitely warmed you up.

Maybe you could get some hot soup from somewhere and keep it in a flask to have with some wholegrain bread, so that it's warming and delicious, and available when you need it through the day. Similarly have some hot drinks in a flask to have as well - some tea or coffee - I realise you'll need a couple of flasks to enable you to do that, but it might be helpful to get you through that time till you can get back home at the end of the day.

Like you say, you don't want to undo all your good work you've achieved so far.

Hope it's going really well, and you're managing to keep warm and energised.

Lowcal :-)

If you were shattered at the end of the day it sounds as though you had a lot of exercise doing all the physical work.

Unless you are going to have battered fish and chips every day for the next week or so, I wouldn't worry too much. It's not that the food is keeping you warmed up but that it is providing calories which you are burning off in hard labour!

If you go to the chippy again, check what's on the menu. Perhaps they do fishcakes or other less fattening items.

You don't need to have hot food and drinks to stay warm, warm clothing and food in general should do the trick. It's just my opinion but I think that, other than holding a mug of hot drink in cold hands, the heat benefit of freshly cooked food is over-rated.

Hope you get power to the new place soon.

Thank you chubby mummy, lowcal and knotty. another long day today and discovered the boiler is no good so still no heating! I managed to steer clear of the chippy and was very organised, so breakfast before I left and I planned a lunch break during the day so I sat down to a healthy salad and a banana as a snack. Felt less tired tonight and after looking up the calories for a chip shop pie and chips I will certainly not be returning for some time! Carpet fitters come tomorrow so another early start to get a second coat of paint on the walls before they arrive. :-)

Hi John,

Sounds like you achieved a lot today, and you were indeed very organised. Brilliant!

Hope the carpet fitters do a good job tomorrow, and hope you get that second coat of paint on in good time before they arrive.

Good luck!

Lowcal :-)
