This is so weird

Hullo again everyone who remembers me!

Its been awhile - in fact it has been about 2 inches of grass awhile - some of you will get that :D

I am a huge advocate for magnesium. Mainly for my heart but in taking it for my heart I found it also helped immensely with my mood.

I was taking two kinds of magnesium - taurate for my heart and another type for general. I ran out of chelated (non taurate) about 4 months ago and decided to just up the taurate, assuming it would all balance out.

I am prone to depression and in the last 3 months it has hit me quite hard as many of you will know. I vaguely wondered if it was stopping the non taurate magnesium but I didn't really think it could be that as I had upped my taurate magnesium to compensate.

Last week I finally got some more general magnesium and started taking it and after 4 days feel so much better in myself. I started on antidepressants about 4 weeks ago but progress has been slow - only in the last couple of days and esp. today have I really noticed a difference and I suspect its mainly down to restarting the magnesium as I have never had great success with antidepressants. Its quite weird.

Its fantastic for anxiety and stabilizing your mood and around 70 - 80% of the population is deficient in magnesium mainly due to modern farming techniques stripping it out of the soil. Its worth a google to see what this amazing little mineral does for us.

I just didn't realise that the broad spectrum (chelated) magnesium I was talking was acting so differently to the taurate (heart) magnesium and could have such an effect on my mood.

SO - I am back. And today is the best I have felt in months so fingers crossed its back to good food and exercise for me. I just have to get past the supermarket today and tomorrow and not buy junk and I will be back in the swing of things - send me good vibes so I can resist the icecream and chocolate monster at the supermarket! :D

Dave - really pleased you are feeling better and hopefully have identified what may have been causing the problem :-) Keep away from that chocolate monster :-)

Hi Dave, Nice to see you back here, I was only thinking last night that I haven't 'seen' Dave around for a while. I've just received some Magnesum from the pharmacy mail order I made last week because I remember you mentioning how important it is. I'll start taking it from today and see if it helps me in any way.

Sorry to hear you've been feeling down, Christmas tends to do that to a lot of people I think. I hope the New Year and your new magnesium pills will help you pick up and get back into the weight loss mode. Cheers to a brilliant 2016.

I'm delighted to see you back Dave and in such high spirits :)

Maybe it would have been a good idea to order your shopping online and get it delivered, not so many temptations that way :)

I can't wait to see you out and about on the forum :)

Dave1961 profile image

I actually do order online but I have a very convenient supermarket right on my way home from work - Its evil!

That's a very inconvenient convenience store! ;)

Could you go home a different way? More exercise, less temptation ....

Hi Dave,

Just noticed your post, and I'm thrilled to see you! I am just going to bed, but I'll be reading your post tomorrow, to see what you've written.

Just wanted to say 'hi' and also say it's great to see you, and sorry I'm dashing off - but I hadn't realised how late it is here (getting close to midnight). :-)

Hi again Dave,

I did sleep well, thanks! Great to read your post this morning, and realise that not only has the grass grown by 2 inches, but you are feeling much better than you had been, those are both great things to hear!

Interesting to hear your experience of the two kinds of magnesium, and glad you have got back to your spectrum (chelated) magnesium again, and that you've noticed an improvement in your mood and well-being.

The fact you described the supermarket as having an 'Icecream and chocolate Monster' inside already made me feel quite scared of the thought of venturing there, so maybe you could develop that theme so that in your mind it truely feels scary to venture near that shop - as literally you might be chased by a scary monster if you try to enter the shop to access the Monster's treasures (that ice-cream and chocolate). I realise that sound quite bizarre, but you definitely conjured up a scary picture for me, and I think I'd avoid it as a result.

Anyway, hopefully you won't venture in there - and you'll feel good about your resolve as the week progresses.

Most importantly, it's really great to have you back with us, and especially that you're feeling better in yourself. Long may that continue, and wishing you a great week ahead.

Lowcal :-)

Whenever I see choc or ice dream I just tell myself it is poisonous I guess it is easy for me to talk as I do not want t get my thrush or any pain back! :) but you could just change the words and say weight back on!

Lots of good luck vibes and walk on by that supermarket. (could you leave your wallet at home?)

in reply toWindswept1

This is a great suggestion. I've done this before -deliberately leaving my wallet at home. If you've got everything you need for the day, packed lunch etc, then no need to carry any money...

Hey Dave good that you're feeling better and great to hear from you🙂 I too have been off line for a while and I'm trying to get my head round a restart but I'm so glad that you're on the up and I'm sending you all my very best wishes you can do it 😉👍🏻

skinnylizzie profile image

you' re in . That's great discovery and I will make sure I up my magnesium intake as I have fought depression in the past . The actual shape of molecules can affect how they react in the body, so one drug could have magnesium in it but another one with magnesium might just be a different shape and so block a chemical reaction. Years ago I studied biochemistry and that aspect, drug design, really interested me, unfortunately I had been studying for 7 years and my children had all got to uni age and life got complicated so I didn't go on to do any further study but it does interest me again now. I am convinced the structure of food and its link up with chemicals in body is key to using up calories, so you can be on very low calories but still not lose because reaction is being blocked by shape of molecule? This is what I am starting to think!

Ahhhh that's interesting thanks for the info :)

Hi Dave,

So good to hear from you and so happy you feel on the mend.I'm really interested in the magnesium supplements, my brother has heart issues and his mood has been low for some months so I'm going to read up a bit and then speak to him( he's my 'little' brother so will listen!!)😃

Sending good vibes to resist the ice cream and choccies and a big {{{{hug}}}} for you.

Take care honeybun

Resisted for the first time in months! I have an electronic copy of a book called The Magnesium Miracle which would be a great reference tool. Its an easy read and really explains how magnesium helps so much for issues like heart and depression. If you want to send me your real world email address I can send it to you.

in reply toDave1961

Thanks Dave, will do that

😇

great to hear you are feeling better and looking forward to a positive year!

Welcome back Dave, glad the grass is faring well. I'm also intrigued by the slight differences you've found with the magnesium. Glad you've identified a solution now and feeling back to your usual self. Hope you won't expect too much too soon though as you've been through a lot. Remember how you slowly built up your strategies before - an Asian salad recipe here, a tentative glance at the bicycle there... I look forward to hearing more about how you get on. If you do need to go to the supermarket, maybe listen to those 'cut the fat' podcasts on headphones as you walk around. Also make a list, take only the exact money you need, go on foot so you have to physically carry what you buy, and take a wide berth to avoid the chocs and crisps :)

Hi Dave good to see you back! Depression is a monster! Remember you are much more than your thoughts and feelings! We all know that every time we read one of your posts. This is the first time in decades I've been free of depression and anxiety and to be honest I never thought I would get here but I have. I waited until I was fairly buoyant then went on something called Mindfulness based stress reduction - took me a while to find a course I trusted. I live my life mindfully now and meditate every day. Seems weird to say that sitting joining nothing for 40 mins a day would have such a huge change but it has. I'll ping you some of the resources I use f your interested.

Good to see you round again young man!

Dave1961 profile image
Dave196125kg in reply toandrewleeone

Thanks Andrew thats means a lot and if you could email me those resources that would be great. I have always been a fan of meditation but have been spasmodic at best with it so perhaps a anew angle will help me get going again.

andrewleeone profile image
andrewleeone in reply toDave1961

I'll ping them or a link to them over. When someone asked me about my depression yesterday - asking if I had it under control I realised that Id gone a lot further - No its gone! was my immediate response - and it has.

Great to hear you're feeling better! So many health problems are deficiency related these days... I also need magnesium for energy and am very lazy about taking it but your post has encouraged me to be serious! Thanks for that!

Hi Dave, sooo pleased to see you back on here and to read how much better you are feeling in yourself. Your post has a good 'ring' about it and I do so hope that it is a sign of better times for you in every way.
