I have survived 4 weeks of being the wobbliest person in the uni gym. All the young ones are running their socks of. I do the cross trainer and walk @ 6 kmh.If I can survive this. Anyone can.

Anyone scared of the gym?
Go you!!! Well done. I go to the gym and only really use the treadmill and rowing machine, happy with just these 2. My daughter comes along sometimes and flits from this to that like a whirlwind, it suits her. Each to their own. I can 'row' for miles in a world of my own and never get bored of it, I think it sort of focuses me to the here and now - if that makes sense, though my mind is wandering. You and your wobbly bits are doing amazingly. π
I can swim for miles but all other stuff is an effort. I am the least cool person in the gym.
Rest assured your not hunny. Don't knock yourself, you are a strong woman. Believe me, it takes more courage to walk in a gym and do your bit when overweight than when looking honed and toned. Most would say you are truly 'cool' and applaud you. You would be surprised at how many of these buff bunnies and bears you encounter at the gym think that it is 'real cool' you are trying to get fit and healthy. π
You are doing well and seem to enjoy what you are doing. I have tried the gym numerous times and it really doesn't suit me. I go to Aqua aerobics 3 times a week and there are all shapes and sizes in the pool so never feel self conscious I also like walking but refer to do that out in the fresh air rather than on a treadmill which I found boring and to be honest I don't see the point of going ro the gym if all I am going to do is walk. When it comes to exercise I think we all have to find what suits us and go for it. Cool or not doesn't really come in to it. Go you, it sounds like you have found what you like x
I agree: The gym is the most boring place in the world for me, I don't understand why people go. The best bit: They DRIVE to the gym to go CYCLING or RUNNING in the gym. Can someone please explain that to me? Much better: Swimming or Exercising outdoors, sunshine for vitamin D and endorphins, even if the sun isn't out, the fresh air still does wonders: Fighting off the cold raises your metabolism, and water is just beautiful. And it is less smelly. I wish there were more outdoor pools... I am sure there are some benefits to the gym, but I haven't found them yet...
Truthfully, I had the same view of a gym as you for many years. Then I joined one ( as support for someone else initially), now my view has totally turned around. It is very difficult to put into words why, but the focus on fitness is so different in this environment. I do miles and miles of walking over hill, fields and woods every week ( apart from this last week π) with my little dog and LOVE IT, but the treadmill gives you something else, a mindset and I LOVE THIS too. It isn't for everyone, and I was as guilty as many in being mind boggled as to why anyone would use a treadmill going nowhere, but I am happy to admit my view was wrong. I get it now, I really get it now. π
Morning Aqua...good for you! Stick on some music and just ignore those young ones!!
Good for you! I'm joining a gym next week and fully expect to be the largest there- it's a matter of gritting your teeth and hearing it I suppose , with the end result in mind π
It is worth joining. I am sure I am benefitting. Just don't ask me for evidence yet. πππππ
I won't lol I'm starting at the gym next week , will let you know how I get on. I was a member there some years and a few stones ago so the aim is to get back to where I used to be
Believe me, my previous comment was not made without experience I have tried the gym many times but it is not for me. I start off with good intentions but get so bored with it I just can't stick to it. Maybe if I went with a buddy I would do better, but I have my doubts
Good for you I started slow and steady now I do 40 mins on the crosstrainer, 40 mins on the tredmill, 20 mins on the rower and then weights I love it now. I really enjoy going to the gym. Also helps that it has tv facilities on every piece of equipment so makes it a little more bareable! Keep up the hard work!
Good on you for going. Nothing worse than being in a gym full of healthy young people.
Go you.
Good for you! It gets easier. Keep going.
Well done Aqua-marine, wish I could do the same but I'm a coward
I wrote this thread to show that if I can face it. It is worth a try.
i take my hat off to you i spent 8 years going 5 days aweek in the gym starting in my teens but i,d never take my fat body in there now to put off all those skinny ppl that dont even need to be there
this is me exactly. i am 20 and im still afraid! i cant run to save my life and dont plan on running on the treadmill either. i walk on an incline at a fast pace at the most. but i feel daft just walking when theres people around me jogging or running on the treadmill and for long periods of time!
i normally do a walk on the treadmill, go on either of the bike machines or sometimes a bit of both. and the cross trainer. occasionally i used the arm machine and i did try the leg machines but my anxiety got the better of me on those ones.
dont be afraid though ! even us young ones struggle
