Hi

Which calculator did you use to work out the calorie intake?

The BMI CALCULATOR on the NHS website

Ah right ok, how I read it is the top end of the calories would maintain your weight and the lower end of the calories would lose you weight.

Personally I would start in the middle around 1450 calories a day and try this for a week and if you lose weight after a week then continue at that level of calories per day, if you then want a faster weight loss lower in by 50 calories a day and try that for a week and so on.

Hope this helps x

Thanks it really does help ..my BMI is 27, gutted I have put weight on, tried slimming world and weight watchers both didn't really work, so decided to count calories instead...just hope it works :) xx

My BMI is 27.9 at the moment.

I tried weight watchers and it didn't work, although I did slimming world and lost 3 stone and have kept it off but now I want to be more precise about what I'm eating and how much as I have no concept of portion size lol. So I've started calorie counting. I only started calorie counting on 1st September and had my first weigh in this morning and lost 3 pounds, so its working for me, hope it will for you too :)

I currently weigh 11 stone 9 and have 1450 calories a day so if you are of similar weight you could probably expect similar results as we are on same calories x

Hi Zante! I am 5ft 1.5 and started my journey at 10 stone 4 lbs. I have 1400 calories a day and I am losing between 1 and 2 lbs a week on this with exercise. I tried sticking to 1200 at the start but it just wasnt enough!

I am also 5ft 1 and 1400 calories was fine when I started calorie counting to lose weight (I was losing 1-2lbs a week), and at my start weight I was 11 stone. However, now I am closer to my goal weight (I am now 7 stone 6lbs, goal is 7 stone 2, I have had to cut my calorie intake to 1100 to continue to lose weight. Therefore I would suggest as you are just starting out, 1400 will be fine for you and you should have minimal problems losing weight at that amount, it's only later that you might have to consume a smaller amount of calories once you get closer to your goal :)

That's reassuring to know, what type of exercise do you do ? x

I've been doing a mixture of High Intensity Interval Training, Body Combat classes, spinning classes and cardio/weight work out at the gym and also ran outside this morning! Exercise becomes addictive once you get going!

I would STRONGLY suggest you download the Myfitnesspal app if you have a smartphone.

Its dead easy to use and when you first start it will ask you your height, weight, activity level, how many times a week you plan to exercise and how much per week you want to lose (for me I only get the choice of half kilo or kilo - it doesn't let you be unreasonable).

It will then give you your calorie goal for the day BUT it also adjusts that as you lose weight. I dropped a few kilos last week and when I updated MFP it took away 40 calories per day to compensate for the lower weight - grrrr! :D

Its an amazingly easy to use food tracker, can scan barcodes (so easy with that tool) and even import web recipes and calculate nutrients and calories for you.

And its free!

I just checked mine on the NHS website and it recommends between 2400 and 3000 cals for me - I would explode if I ate that much!

I am much happier at the 1700 cal goal MFP has set me and I don't feel deprieved or hungry.
