Lemon water?!

sarahlouisedenton99 profile image

I'm hoping to embark upon the challenge of consuming almost a gallon of water a day, hoping it'll do my poor nutrient deprived body some good. However I've read that lemon water can be a good weight loss aid, is this true? Any experiences? Hope you all had a really lovely Easter weekend x

Keeping hydrated is important for health, but drinking a lot of water is not a good idea. It can put a strain on your kidneys and have seriously bad effects on your body.

Drink when you are thirsty and stop when you are no longer thirsty.

Sarah

Lemon water first thing in the morning is advised by a lot of Nutritionists.

If you are going to drink that much water you should add a pinch of Himalayan or Celtic salt to the water to replace the minerals you will lose by drinking so much water. I suggest you google water and Salt and Check out the work of Dr Batmanghelidj - Also watch his videos on You Tube

That's too much water to drink in a day so why do it? Half that amount would be enough without depleting the vitamins and minerals you have so don't flush those out.

Somehow I am not too keen to drink plenty more than my body requires. I now drink when I am thirsty, or if hungry instead of eating something. I think you body is the best to advise you what it wants (except chocolate of course)

What a strange idea. i though 2l a day was the recommended amount. What is the reasoning behind so much water?

Lemon in water will help you cleanse toxins in your body and you'll go more to the loo. It's great to avoid water retention. 8-10 glasses a day should be enough.

Please don't. Unless you have a medical condition that stops you feeling thirst, your normal senses are the safest guide to fluid intake. The two litres a day thing is a myth that may go as far back as WWII and the size of the bags used for intravenous drips.

In recent years people have actually died from over hydration in extreme cases.

If you think tea and coffee are dehydrating you can relax - it's known that they don't because your body adjusts so well to the diuretic effect.

As for nutrition, lemon in water sounds like a sticking plaster on a wound requiring major surgery! Eat a nice range of fruit, veg, grains, eggs, milk, etc and meat if you like it. No little tweak in diet can come close to eating properly.

Please don't do the water thing, it's futile and potentially dangerous as it can stress your internal organs.

We need water ,and of course its "good" in that it has no calories - a gallon though? But you kind of answer your own question and need to ask another. "why are you nutrient deprived". Healthy balanced diet is trotted out often, so why do we still not know what it is? Dare I ask if you're eating a lot of "junk" and if so, why? I ask the questions on order to get you to think a bit. Hope it helps. Good luck

Hi Sarahlouise just hope you have read the good advice that has been given to you from other members. As has been said that much water is going to cause more harm than good. Too much water will flush out the nutrients that you are hoping to boost, so in effect making your body more nutrient deprived. 2 litres is going to be as much as you need. On another note, lemons are very acidic and even in water they will start to eat the enamel on your teeth away. It may take a while but it's best not to start, as enamel erosion looks unsightly and cause sensitivity. Sorry to be a bore and good luck.

Sarah that much water a day will KILL you!

If you read the first of todays posts and look at the related posts shown on the right, you will find some excellent advice on low sugar diets that have healed people who could never keep weight off just by counting calories.

the related post that I mentioned was "Does low fat equal weight loss?"

I've now come to my senses a gallon is slightly to much water;) for my weight according to an app called 'plant nanny' in order to maintain adequate hydration I should be drinking 3.5 litres a day. The reasoning behind drinking so much, is that I've had years of trouble with acne and I'm hoping this could potentially become a habit to which a clear complexion may follow. Secondly I mistake thirst for hunger and binge terribly, I seem to not be able to understand the difference between the two. Therefore drinking a lot will prevent me eating when I'm not in fact hungry. I was going to drink lemon water in a morning as it is supposed to boost metabolism and cleanse the body of toxins, this would not be in place of a healthy and balanced diet, as I am more than confident than my love of good food can not be replaced by citrus tasting water. thank you all for your informative replies and helpful comments x
