I recently started taking Vit D , to improve my weak nails and hair (caused by either lack of sun or my diet I guess ). Only been 2 wks and cant say ive noticed any change in my mood as such... sorry not much help am I !!
If possible, it's more effective to get your vitamins from food.
You could try eggs for breakfast (vit D), and eat oily fish once a week. Vit D is one of the fat soluble vitamins, so it's not a good idea to go too low fat. If you need extra, cod liver oil is a very traditional supplement. Hopefully, the better weather is on the way and you will be able to get outside.
Eat the best quality meat and fish that you can afford and a wide range of vegetables, especially green veg. One very good source of B12 is liver.
If the 'down in the dumps' goes on for any length of time, perhaps you could talk to your doctor?
I take D3 daily (5,000 IU) but not to combat depression so I can't say whether it helps with that or not, it is though important that you ensure you are getting enough Vit K2, either through diet or a supplement if you are taking extra Vit D3.
I was perscribed vit D for SAD, it help loads! Visit you doc & as for a blood test, they can tell you what you need, Calcium can also affect vit D so worth getting tested xx
