Hi, im 21, female, and weigh 16 1/2 stone. Im desperate to lose weight to feel better about myself, take the weight off my knees that i had surgery on as a young teen, be able to enjoy life to the max, exercise my dogs better and get into some sports with them. I fell into depression and have bad anxiety so have been unemployed for a few years now and gained all the weight.
Does anyone else experience not wanting food? Like i get hungry, but i dont fancy anything. At all. Its infuriating because there is nothing that makes me think 'oooh this would be great for dinner' i just sit there hungry. I dont enjoy my meals because i never actually want them. I just end up eating because im so hungry and i have to.

I have to say that's something I rarely, if ever suffer from, I love food and if I'm hungry am very happy to eat it. However, it's important to make sure that the food you're offering yourself is tasty, as well as nutritious. If you look at our Daily Diary, Springers Specials and hundreds of recipes, I'm sure you'll find something that will tickle your taste buds
All of the information you need about the forum can be found in Pinned Posts healthunlocked.com/weight-l... and we hope you'll be joining all the Events, Challenges and Clubs that we run, especially the weigh-in and daily diary.
We've found active participation to be key to successful weight loss and, of course, it's a good way to get to know people, find inspiration and share support and encouragement.
thanks for you reply. i love food too, i always have done! its just within the past 6 months i dont feel like i want anything, even though i love everything! i will check out the pinned posts, thank you.
Good morning, indiedog1, it's good to have you here.
There are a lot of dog lovers around here (see this week's chat, in Pinned Posts) and lots of people with dodgy joints. I'm tagging springersrule and she'll get back to you when she's here.
I'm thinking about what you say about not looking forward to food. I'm sure you can turn that round. Being overweight does give us a bad relationship to food, especially when we're not all that certain what the healthy options are. Do you cook? I don't mean entering MasterChef, just putting a meal together for yourself?
I wonder if you would find this blog interesting, form a GP who made great changes to her health and weight with a few changes fatismyfriend.co.uk/ It includes a sample week's menu.
Now, have a look through Pinned Posts following the link moreless has given you, and start getting to know people. Good luck
Hello, BridgeGirl, I hope you are ok. I have clicked into the link fat is my friend you sent to indiedog1, it looks very interesting, thank you very much. Take care x
thanks for your reply. im a hugre dog enthusiast so if you happen to know of any other dog fans in the group that would be great. or in fact animal enthusiasts all together.
i actually love food. i always have done. thats why its so frustrating that i dont fancy anything at the moment. i was vegetarian, but felt bored of the same things, so went back to eating meat but it hasnt made a difference i still feel the same way.
that blog is interesting, thank you. ive had a skim through but i will read it thoroughly when i get the chance.
At different times when I've got bored, I look for a new recipe or even a new ingredient that I haven't tried. It's not always a success but at least it isn't boring
Maybe prepare your food before you walk the dog then you only have to heat and eat knowing the food is ready may encourage you to walk further . I thought if I didn't eat or miss meals this was the magic cure . This was the worst thing I could of done and going from 1250 cals to 1450 with a little more exercise actually made me shed weight faster.
this may be a good idea but im not sure it would work for me 🤔 im quite happy to walk for hours and hours and still come back and cook something, or make food. its more that i dont feel like im enjoying anything i eat. i would worry that i would make food before i left, come back, and then really not want it and it would go to waste
Hello indiedog1, welcome to the site and you have made a good move joining the family. I hope that you get some ideas from the forum to make food interesting for you. You and I are the same weight, I am 65 and 16S 6 1/2Lbs, I know how you feel about wanting to do more stuff, I want to as well. About not fancying food, do you have anything special you like to eat, if you do start with that and work round it, a colourful plate of food can help, if it looks nice it tastes better I have found. I wish you well on your journey. Take care x
hi, thank you. normally i would say pizza is a favourite, but because its my favourite, when i dont fancy anything i normally default to pizza. unfortunatly, i feel like ive eaten it so much that i dont even want that anymore!
Hello there! Your surgery is over and now you have gone through that tough time. So, forget it because it won't happen again. You'll be alright, fit, slim and smart because you are worth it.
The news in dieting is that you can still enjoy your favourite foods but moderation is the key. Eat from all food groups 1. Wholegrain breads, pasta and brown rice 2. All colors and types of fruits and vegetables 3. Low-fat dairy (flavoured for taste) 4. Proteins from chicken, fish, lentils, chickpea and beans 5. Nuts and dry fruits. Use the plate method for calorie and portion control. Simply, take a nine inches plate and divide it into 4 portions - 1st for wholegrains 2nd for fruit 3rd for vegetables and 4th for proteins and enjoy a balanced lunch or dinner. You can add a 250 ml pack of low-fat milk with it. Drink plenty of water.
Choose healthy unsaturated fats and oils like canula and olive oil. Order or cook meals grilling, roasting, boiling, blenching, broiling, bbq and air frying (though air-frying also has health concerns). Avoid fried food, white bread, cakes, cookies, solid fats like butter added salt and sugars esp in drinks. Replace alcohol with diet and zero calorie soft drinks (they are fine while dieting and replacing alcohol but still carry the risk of diabetes).
If you prefer not to use your lower limbs but you can still exercise the uppers. Start with some strength training like bench press or resistance bands and flexibility stretches. Incorporate exercise in your daily routine.
You can also fast once or twice a week for 14-16 hours - eating nothing just water, black tea and black coffee.
Hello and welcome, TeamAdmin will be along shortly with your welcome info but in the meantime would you like to join us on our weigh in today? Here's the link, hope to see you there x
hi, yes the surgerys were 10 years, and 3 years ago, but unfortunatly i still experience alot of pain and instability from both. they did fix the original problem but now i have side effects.
thank you for your dieting advice. i feel like my diet is already reasonably healthy, and well rounded the majority of the time. there is always room for improvement and there are definetly things i can improve on. i really want to exercise more, but find i always have alack of energy due to mental health.
For your depression listen to positive affirmations and self guided meditations on youtube, be in company of some people instead of exercising alone, watch comedy, be a brave girl, have hope and faith. A good psychiatrist can also prescribe you anti depressant or anti anxiety if you can't overcome yourself.
Hi Indiedog1, lovely to meet you. BridgeGirl tagged me as I'm a crazy dog lady and I've had joint problems and several operations in a few in the past and recently. The first thing I'm going to do is give you a link to my 1 year anniversary (here on the forum) post and it gives a lot of my story there and hopefully wont make this reply into a tome lol.
I've read through all the replies you've had so far and I bet you are feeling a bit overwhelmed already. It happens to us all 😁 I've never had a problem not wanting to eat, even through the worst of my depression. My default has always been to eat, hungry or not and sometimes even if I don't like it. I cant say I ever particularly enjoyed what I was eating though, it was a means to an end. Starting my journey here, in particular the Daily Diaries, opened my eyes to eating delicious food and I have to say I love cooking now and my treats are eating the delicious meals I create. In my opinion, your best first move is to try something different with lots of flavour and work up from there. I'm still discovering firsts for me, I made a taco meal for the first time this week (I'm 54 and had never had a taco!!)
Moving on to doing 'more', this can be really hard when you're in pain, believe me I know, but every little bit you can do does help, particularly with mental health. When I fractured my knee in 2020 I was given a rollator (trolley with wheels and a seat) and that meant I could still get out with my dogs and look after friends dogs (1 of my jobs). Still being able to get out and about made the world of difference as it was a year before I got a half knee replacement to mend the damage done. I also found some seated YouTube videos, seated yoga dancing is great fun and really lifts the spirits too.
Now onto dogs... Now here is where I could really ramble forever will grab my hand to stop me typing too much lol I have 3 of my own, 2 springers and a lab and look after a myriad of others. At the moment, I also have 2 westies, 2 cockers and another lab staying with me - told you I was a crazy dog lady 😂😂 Before covid and the knee injury I did agility with the spaniels (lab is retired) and plan to get back to it very soon.
I'm now grabbing my hand to stop me typing more but happy to chat more on any of the above points. I don't want to overwhelm you even more just now.I
Hello springers rule, I have been reading your brilliant reply to indiedog1, you have made me think now, I am 65 and I have never had a taco, or a curry, or a pitta bread and I am going to try something new next week. Thank you very much. Take care x
Hi Imustdothis, i'm so glad my reply has inspired you to try something new. I love having kitchen adventures, there's so many things i haven't tried and slowly but surely i'm making my way through them xx
