Starting a journey

Today I realised the extent of the weightloss required. I wouldn't say I'm huge, but after reviewing my BMI I know that I have a lot of work to do.

It's not just about the weight though, I want to be healthier and fitter - I want to know that I'm putting the nutrients I need into my body and that I'm making good decisions... plus, I still want to be able to treat myself every so often, else I'll go mad.

My next step is to think about the things my body needs and how to get more of them in a cost effective manner, whilst avoiding any deprivation of calories etc. I don't want to go down the route of eating too little and causing the muscle I do have, to be burned for energy.

Hopefully along the way I'll learn more about what I need and how the things I'm eating/drinking affect my energy and weight.

At the moment, I'm at my heaviest... for now lets just see how I get on and use this as a journal to post my challenges, successes and losses - every little helps right?!

Height: 5'7

Weight: 16st 4lbs

BMI: 35

Hopefully there'll be an improvement soon!

K

Well done for making a start. It's a journey and you learm along the way. They say including a little protein with every meal helps prevent muscLe loss. I am trying that plus trying to clock up 7 or 8000 stes between a walk at lunch time and when I get home from work. First weigh on Friday so will see how I get on. I also find planning my days meals the night before helps.

Good luck

If you have the time it's a good idea to find out about nutrition. Unfortunately there's a lot of conflicting advice out there! If you want to read about how food affects our bodies, I would recommend reading 'Fat Chance' by Robert Lustig, who is an American obesity expert.

If you can cook most of your meals from scratch it's probably going to help you lose weight. If you need to use packaged food, read the ingredients and check that there is no added sugar, it gets put in lots of food, even stuff that is advertised as "healthy".

Like Sunflower, I have protein with every meal, and find that a protein breakfast like eggs, helps me to get through the morning. I need to keep an eye on my carb intake.

Good luck with your weight loss.
