The bit I really liked was "The problem is that sensible food advice, rather than faddy trends, tend to be a bit boring"

Ain't that the truth!

That is a really interesting study. I went and read the original scientific article and the research was quite well conducted (I also work in research in a similar field). It does seem like there is less and less evidence to support the argument that we should replace sources of saturated fat with sources that are polyunsaturated. I remember there was a BMJ article last year reporting a clinical trial that also showed that replacing saturated fat with polyunsaturated was ineffective at lowering cardiovascular risk. It will be interesting to see what happens in the next few years with official dietary advice on what to eat for "healthy fats".

However, despite the difficultly in sorting out some of the finer details, the main points of a healthy lifestyle remain the same:

"The key to a healthy heart remains a balanced and varied diet - with a strong emphasis on vegetables and fruit. Add to that exercise and not smoking."

(and I will continue to have butter on my toast and potatoes rather than marg :) )

The article talks about how we shouldn't be eating cream cakes and fatty meat pies. If you eat your fat along with refined flour and/or sugar then it certainly will not be good for you!

The debate on saturated fats has been going on for 40 years. Although John Yudkin found evidence that sugar was to blame for the increases in obesity and heart problems, the views of Ancel Keys on fat were taken as correct. The result has been an increase in obesity, type 2 diabetes and heart disease. It's been a health disaster.

The advice on healthy eating should contain a stronger emphasis on avoiding processed foods, margarine, and added sugar, and emphasising 'whole foods' along with vegetables and fruit.

The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition contains a similar article on saturated fat.
