Hi all, I'm embarrassed to say that I've amassed a very unhealthy weight of 14.29 stone! I am 5'8" and have a difficult job finding time to exercise due to long hours.
I'm determined to loose a good chunk of the weight though and started a cut down last week. No crisps, biscuits, chocolate, pastry etc and sticking to three meals a day, oats, salads, chicken, baked potatoes, fresh veg to fill up on that kind of thing.
This will be a big change for me and I hope that regular Pilates and walking will help me to lose the ugly bulges!

How about using that dislike to your advantage? Take a deep breath or look the other way, then take a pic of yourself in your underwear, print it off and stick it up somewhere. No one else has to see it but you could stick it inside your wardrobe door, for example.
The pic is also a great thing to compare against as you lose weight.
Welcome! You can get lots of support here. Have you joined a weigh-in and are you checking out the Daily Diary (menu plans)?
Great job on your self-discipline in giving up the crisps, biscuits, etc.
One thing I’ve learned from this forum is that low-fat is not a good way to lose weight for a lot of people, so you might check out some of the posts on low carb, high fat eating. Counter-intuitively, I’ve started adding healthy fats (olive oil, avocado, nuts, etc) to every meal and snack. I actually use 400 calories a day of my allowance on just added fat! (Previously I would have thought that was such a waste.). What I’ve realised is that if I eat plain veggies or fruit, I’m soon hungry for more. However, if I add fat, I’m satisfied. I am now rarely hungry, and losing weight consistently. I also have cut out simple carbs (bread, pasta, rice, and even most fruit except berries).
But everyone has to find their own eating plan that works best for them. You will see lots of ideas and get lots of support here.
Thank you for your tips and encouragement! I do use a little olive, sesame and even a little butter on certain things. I think the additional munching being cut out will be a big effort but an essential bad habit that I'm aware of and cutting it out should help a lot! Fingers crossed!
There's the psychology of not eating those 'tasty' things and then there's the possibility of possibly feeling hungry. Carbs, especially simple ones, give the body an energy rush but soon leave us feeling depleted and hungry, whereas the fats that Juppy has mentioned keep us feeling sated for longer and our body doesn't actually turn them into stored fat as readily as it does with carbs.
Hi Airedale39, I’m very similar I’m 5’7” and my starting weight this week was 14.4. I put my details in on the NHS BMI calculator and it’s 31.7 and marked as obese, I could have cried. I then came across healthunlocked.com and so far so good. There’s lots of fab info on here. I’m on my 4th day and feeling so much better already. Good luck with the weight loss
Hey it’s alright I suppose. It’s not an easy journey is it..not when you’ve got a handful of health issues that sabotage everything.. I went from 15.4 to 15.2 so that’s a bonus. When I first started the high fat low carb I was 15.6 I think. So despite my set backs some fluid has come off me 🤣🤣
Hi Airdale39 I also am about 14 stone and 5 ft 8 and have been on a calorie controlled diet which is 1400 a day the nhs do a programme and have lost 3lb this week. I am only looking at losing a pound a week so anything is great x it's hard when we work long hours and finding time to exercise x but go for it you will be great !!
The best advice I can give is have enough to eat. If you are following the NHS 12 Week plan then the 1400/1900 calorie target suggested is a just generic amount, please check your own personal calorie target using the BMI checker, it’s often higher than you think. We always advise starting towards the top of the range, being hungry is the biggest cause of weight loss failure.
If you haven’t already then please read the Welcome post here healthunlocked.com/nhsweigh... please read it carefully and just ask if you have any questions.
Please don’t feel embarrassed there is no judgement here. 😊
I hope you’ve had time to read all the information I gave you yesterday, I notice you’re post is still unlocked though. ☹️ Many People won’t respond to an unlocked post, please select “members of my community” when writing a new post

Hi Airedale39 , don’t be embarrassed! Life - and weight - creeps up on us while we are planning to do other things! You have found the right place to start and a great group of virtual friends who will cheer your success and remotivate you on any small slips! We are all human - apart from my husband who must truly be part alien - and we understand because we are all wearing the ‘i was fat once’ t shirt! And it doesn’t matter how much - or how little - you have to lose. We all know what it’s like to ‘feel’ fat, even when we know we aren’t and to recognise the problem when people say ‘oh but you’re great the way you are and you are so jolly’
You will get lots of very useful information here, plus a lot of support.
Good morning Airedale. When I started this diet I was 12st 10lb, never weighed that much apart from when pregnant. I was horrified too! However I decided I was adopting a healthy lifestyle rather than a diet, so I do the lchf one. I have lost almost a stone, it hasn't been quick and I stalled for 3 weeks at one point, but then discovered I'd lost inches! So put the self loathing behind you and crack on with your new life. There is lots of help on this forum if you need it. Good luck! 😊
Well done you for starting and coming on this site. The horror will soon be replaced by joy as you start to lose weight and feel better. The people on this site are really supportive and useful.
Stick at it, I was a similar weight myself last year, I joined Slimming world and lost 3st 7lbs, I didn't have huge losses it was on average half or a pound a week. It worked for me and I have stayed at target all this year. It's a low fat healthy diet.
Three stone 7lbs?? I dream of being that slimmer! Used to have quite a neat waist etc, now I'm a shapeless blob with over hang! I need to reverse this! Thanks Kathq!!
And I lost nearly 3stone 7lbs with the support of this forum and following a low carb increased fat approach. Learning that (dietary) fat doesn't make you fat is probably the best thing I learned here 😃
