Hi sonyaaxo,

Whilst I am sure that there is lots of information about suitable dietary requirements for diabetics to be found on the internet, my advice to anyone planning to start a weight loss programme, who has any underlying medical condition is to talk with their medical professionals (GP, practice nurse, specialist) about how the planned weight loss might impinge upon the underlying condition (including any treatments / medications) and vice versa.

Intrinsically, the 12 week plan is a general weight loss plan - and in my view quite a good one indeed, and also totally free - but that doesn't mean it's going to be appropriate for every single person irrespective of any medical issues they may have.

Good luck with your weight loss efforts.

Hi sony I am type 1 too and have been for 30 years. I now have an insulin pump now which has made my eating more flexible, Insulin is a fattening product so if you are having more than you need are bound to gain weight.

When I was first diagonosed it was in the times of injections and regular eating to feed the highs of injections so meals at regular points and with a prescribed amount of carbs, and I continued to steadily gain weight at my heaviest I was 17 stones :( I then went down to 12.5 I was happy with that my pre diabtic weight but then went back up over the next couple of years to 15.5, then down to 13.5, at the beining of 2013 I was 14.5 and have managed to go down to 10.10 which I love so currently I am less than my pre diabetic weight and feeling fab, but I think your health professionals would have a heart attack if they knew how I had lost and maintain my weight! Mine have just come to accept thats the way I am! It does involve a fair amount of excersise that said (apart from currently 1/2 marathon training) it involves things that are useful (walking to work) or I enjoy aerobics and zumba and bodypump and less so on the enjoyment stakes spin cycling but that burns fat.

Sorry off on a tangent - I quite often have carbs from carrots or swede and the like that are less starchy and fattening than potatoes if you have carboyhdrate goals with meals

See if the hospital has a dietician you can talk to but you may need to try a few eating plans before you find one that suits - good luck

Have a look at the Diabetes Forum as well. There are a lot of discussions around weight loss. High fibre carbs seem to be a good idea for some people.

Hi sonyaaxo, its tough to slim down when you have type 1 diabetes children me. I lost 18 lbs also it wasnt easy I virtually just ate just as much egg whites as i wanted throughout the day a ton of raw and steamed vegetables, 3 areas of fruit (no bananas, if you don't plan on exercising) 80 oz. water a day, a serving of protein like chicken or canned tuna, 2 areas of starch (for example 1/2 potato, 1/2 c brown rice or 1 slice of diet bread) along with a protein bar every day. good luck it helped me
