debating wether to go on the pill or not

I was diagnosed with PCOS at 18 and my doctors were not great at explaining my options to be honest, I was told I could go on the pill and it would help my symptoms and it had "added benefits", which honestly made me feel very uncomfortable and leave as quickly as possible because I am gay, so there is no need for the added benefits. I have since been dealing with a Russian roulette of periods some lasting two days, some lasting ten, I can be in a lot of pain or none, have really heavy periods or super light and then there's the inconsistency... so I've been wondering if the pill will help my symptoms or wether I should just keep trying to naturally balance my hormones, because 50% of them are soo light and not painful, I barely notice. its just sometime I am in a lot of pain, to the extent I have had to take time off at uni. so im wondering if anyone has had this extreme irregularity and any success on birth control? or are there better alternatives?
