Copper coil

I’ve recently had a baby and I’m thinking about contraception. I don’t get on with progesterone only contraception so injection, implant and mini pill are out as is the progesterone coil.

My choices seem to be at the moment the combined pill or the copper coil. What are people’s experiences of the copper coil? I’m tempted to go for the copper coil as I don’t really want to go on hormonal pills again on a long term basis.. and I’m also 36 so need to think about that too.

I don’t get periods on my own and my gp at my 6 week check didn’t really have any advice. Am I better off going to a sexual health clinic to get advice?

Thanks.

Hello,

I also never got on with hormone contraception so I have the copper coil. As a contraception i find it much better, the disadvantage for me as I have incredibly heavy periods with it (much much worse than before) and really bad cramps. For me that once a month is better than struggling with the impact hormones have on me. If you dont get periods it probably won't have the same impact?

P.s. congratulations on having a baby!

Ah thank you! I’ve decided to give it a go, if it doesn’t agree with me then I’ll try something else. 😊

Thanks hols. That’s good to know you’re still on the pill. My gp was like ooh you’re getting a bit old for that. Lol.

I want to try and avoid hormones if I can help it, as my skin is the clearest it’s been in years which I’ve put down to not taking the pill for so long!

Hi!

Congratulations on having a baby!

I prefer the copper coil. I actually had the injection for years, and had a sudden surge of weight after being on it a couple of years so changed to the implant. I ended up having that removed to be tested for PCOS (bloods finally came back as positive after having it removed) and I went on the copper coil. I've been no bother on it, and it feels nice to know I'm finally free of taking hormones after taking them for 9 years. x
