Anyone else on Metformin for PCOS? I've just started taking it (last Saturday) so coming to the end of Week 1 and I haven't lost a single pound!

I've not gained either but I thought this was meant to help lose weight?

I will say that I've not had the usual side effects everyone talks about, I'm constipated (Sorry TMI) if anything.

Be interested to hear other peoples experiences.

Differing opinions on metformin. The endocrinologists that advise Verity say that the only reason it can help with conceiving is the bad side effects rather than it doing anything. Were you tested for insulin resistance prior to being put on it? I tried it also some years ago, didnt get an upset tum and didnt lose weight. I think for ladies who are IR it can help control the symptoms though, I am not IR ! It is not licenced in the UK for pcos as it is primarily a diabetes drug.

Yeah I've been tested and I dont have IR either. Just thought it still might help with the weight. I might give it until I'm taking the max dose I've been prescribed and if it does nothing i'll just stop as I dont NEED to be on it x

Hi Mouse87

I was tested positive for IR and put on Metformin and oestrogen patches about 6 weeks ago. In the beginning I had some side effects but eventually they went away. The good thing is that after years of very irregular periods, I’ve now had 2 consecutive regular periods (first one was hell though! But expected and my doctor also gave me some tablets to protect the womb lining, taken every 3 months). I’ve not yet lost much weight but I need to re-adjust my diet and exercise routine (lowering carbs intake and regular exercise should help, recent holiday to France eating bread and pastries hasn’t helped lol) but it takes time to change a lifetime of bad habits and I refuse to be a slave from PCOS and want to take the right time to become healthier and succeed.

Since you’re not IR, I would question your doctor to understand why he/she decided to prescribe you Metforming and enquire about alternative treatments that could be more suitable.

All the best 😊

I think she prescribed it to regulate my cycles. They're a bit hit and miss and my most recent one came with 2 weeks of random spotting and 2 weeks after that I had the most horrendous period, so I also and Transexemic Acid for the next one so I don't lose as much blood!

Try inositol as I know lots of ladies have tried it and it has helped with their periods hugely.

Hi, I've been on Metformin for 3 months now. I got some side effects such as nausea after taking the tablets to begin with when I was on 3x 500mg. But I got used to it and then the nausea went away. I lost a little bit of weight to begin with but then nothing changed. I haven't gained any weight or lost anymore. I think side effects vary on the dose and the person. Hope that helps in anyway. X
