To test if you have PCOS, what will your GP/ doctor do? Do you get an x-ray or a blood test?

I am 16 and have irregular periods and excessive hair growth so I have to visit my GP but I don’t know what it entails:)

I was told I had PCOS after an ultrasound that I had done to investigate my irregular periods. A few years later had another one where they told me I didn’t have PCOS. Then recently I’ve had lots of gynaecological issues and saw a specialist who looked at my back, boobs, stomach and confirmed I do have it. I would imagine they will look at you and probably send you to have an ultrasound, they’ll probably take blood as well I think they do this to measure hormones. X

I was diagnosed at the age of 16. I had an ultrasound that led to an mri. I also had some blood tests to test hormone levels. All in all not much happening but the results can take a while. My advice would be to ask the ultrasound technician if you can see your scan and if they can see anything. Good luck

Hi.

My GP took blood tests which showed abnormal hormone levels. He said that it was most likely pcos. At that time he referred me to a specialist. I was sent for ultrasound of my ovaries to see.if there were any follicles.

My ovaries were actually clear but the doctor advised that you only need to have two out of three symptoms to be confirmed pcos.

Hope this helps.

Just a reminder that cysts are only a symptom and not the cause and not everyone has cyst but still has pcos, they can come and go so one scan may show them but a year later you may not have any. I would write down a list of your symptoms, they should do a scan and blood tests (blood tests can also be hit and miss too sadly), you can be diagnosed on symptoms alone.

I had some blood tests and ultrasound scan organised by my GP. The sonographer told me I had polycystic ovaries straight away and the bloods showed too much Testosterone and v low progesterone. I have very irregular periods, acne, hair loss but no excess hair. Have been on metformin to help and recently had first natural period in about 8 months, now waiting to see a fertility consultant to help us conceive!
