Hello Tamidi!

Aspirin is used for pain relief, as I am sure you know. Doctors tell us that people taking prednisolone (steroids) should not take aspirin because they interact badly. It is better to use paracetamol, if pain relief is needed.

I hope this has answered your question.

She has no pain at all from the beginning. She is on calcort(steroids).I know that aspirin is anti-clotting pill, but also cause prolonged bleeding.Do you take it,and how long.

Best wishes.

I take a small dose(75 mg) of dispersable aspirin each day, as a blood thinner. For pain relief I've been told to take paracetamol. In my case I have inflammation in my main aorta; statins have bad side effects for me, so my GP has kept me on the aspirin.

Yes, I had forgotten that low dose aspirin is taken as a blood thinner! However, aspirin should not be taken with any steroids (calcort included) unless your doctor approves, so do ask him or her for advice, Tamidil!

Good luck!

Low dose Aspirin is usually prescribed to help thin the blood for heart conditions or strokes. It has a proven track record of reducing the likelihood of (repeat) heart attacks and strokes. My heart failure nurse once told me it was the most important heart drug I was taking ! I think it has even been shown to have benefits for cancer sufferers.

Statins are also used for heart conditions. They have a simillarly impressive record, but in this case they reduce cholesterol and contribute significantly to improved life expectancy in patients with heart conditions. As with Aspirin they also have potential benefits for cancer patients.

Like all drugs, both Aspirin and Statins have potential side effects though. As has been said, Aspirin can cause bleeding and can also iritate the lining of the stomach. As a result the soluble kind of tablets should be used and also taken with food. Statins occasionally cause muscle problems and some people can't tolerate them. But if you get any unusual side effects you should talk to your GP to see what's going on and whether alternatives are possible.

I'm not aware of any restrictions on taking Aspirin alongside Steroids (I take both myself). But like Aspirin, Steroids are known to cause stomach problems and so it may be this that is the issue. My consultant and GP have prescribed Ranitidine (a stomach protector) to help me with this but there are many others that can be given (Omeprazole etc). Again, I'd talk to your GP if you think you might have a problem here.

And finally, as everyone has said, any medicine should only be taken (or stopped being taken) under the guidance of your GP and/or consultant. Drugs may interact and only your clinician can help you decide if the benefits will outweigh the risks.

All the best,

Richard.

I don't take Aspirin, and was ordered never to take it again by my consultant when I started immunosuppressive drugs (Azathioprine initially, later lots of others). As far as I know people on anti-inflammatory immunosuppressive drugs like Aza etc. are not recommended to take Aspirin, because of the way it and those other drugs works. Same goes for not taking Ibuprofen. It means for pain relief I can just take Paracetamol, or if need be Co-Codamol.

Dear tamdi,

I can't add much, if anything, to the above except to say that I have been on a low dose aspirin, 75mg, for seventeen years-true I am on omeprazole as well. This is in conjunction with steroids, anti-rejection drugs, I've had a kidney transplant, prednisolone, MMF and indeed a whole host of other 'things', over the years.

In the early years of my treatment, the first two years actually, I regularly had 'chemo-therapy' as well. Sorry that I can't be more help.

Very best wishes AndrewT
