It can be something as simple as an infection or scarring from the same. It may also indicate the presence of fluid, vasculitis or equally sinister causes but the fact you have been asked to return in two weeks is hopefully as your clinician doesn't find it a major concern (assuming they are well acquainted with vasculitis). If in doubt, ask to see it and have it clarified perhaps with a second opinion. Don't assume doctor always knows best. Often they don't...

i have WG and had a chest xray that discovered a "shadow" repeat xrays and ct scans and the dr's dtill could not determine that the small growing nodule was causing any trouble. I had no symptoms or pain and due to the position of this nodule they decided that trying to take a biopsy would be more troublesome for me. So they decidied to "watch, wait and see" their words not mine. How wrong they were! On new years ever my WG flared up and attacked my lungs within 2 days i was on a ventilator for 10 days whilst they stopped the bleeding in my lungs and tried to save my life! The worst i had ever had prior to this was swollen and aching hands and feet! Please dont under estimate what you have - my dr's attitude to my nodule almost killed me! I have been left with scarring in my lungs and they will never be the same again, but i'm here and i now have a new consultant caring for me! Good Luck

I had a shadow on my lung for 6 months before it was discovered I had an Eosinophilic Pneumonia, was subsequestly diagnosed with Churg Strauss Syndrome after a lung biopsy.

Definitely get it checked out.

Best wishes

Hi Nanny, This isn't serious I had the same, I had a shadow on my lung after an X-ray and there are lots of things that cause this a slight infection, a common cold even the position from which the X Ray is taken, this is the reason why they do a repeat in two weeks if it is caused by a slight infection the two week period gives it time to clear and remember we all can have infections without any outwardly signs. I wouldn't worry about it so much. I'm sure when you go for your repeat it will have cleared up.

Hi, I always think the problem is the wording they use, a 'shadow' always sounds so sinister. My nan had lung cancer and that was the words they used to her. When they used the same words to me after an x-ray I nearly passed out in shock! It turned out to be a chest infection. I have had many since and also pleurisy and they called them all shadows on my x-rays. As long as you are getting the 2 week call back you should be fine. I have asthma so if I get a cold I always get a chest infection and they always do a follow up x-ray afer 2 weeks to check its all clear. So as Dave and Martin say try not to worry. You are getting the 2 week call back as a double check.

I don't want to give you 'false hope' but I wouldn't worry too much, if I were you. It will probably be 'nothing' the fact that they haven't rushed in for 'further tests' is a good sign. Please do let me (us) know well you? Good luck. AndrewT
