Carotid endartectomy.... petrified...

Hi, my husband is about to undergo an endartectomy on his left side as he had a Tia last week which resulted in them finding out that his left carotid artery is blocked between 70-80%. He is only 51, very active, high blood pressure but treated, on super huge dose of stains and some drug that acts like aspirin. I am so nervous as the risk of a stroke whilst on the table is 2%... I know that it doesn't see a lot but considering he has been incredibly active walking 20 miles a day and skiing for over 2 months this season, the whole episode has come as a shock. Has anyone got any experiences they can share, positive if possible as negative at this stage is not going to help ....he is due in on Thursday for the op

Hello Margaret. I am not usually on this forum, but sometimes this site has a post which I can relate to. I do hope I can give you some reassurance, by tellling you that a friend of mine had this op, which your hubby is going to have, in Feb, this year, and has made a very good recovery. I met her for coffee in April. She was wering a long scarf to hide the long scar, but was looking and feeling well. She also had a TIA which resulted in the carotid artery op. She wasn't able to drive, afterwards, for some time, but, is now able to do so. I don't know her meds, but she is very well now.

Thank you so much, I usually post on here for myself when I am struggling with my various conditions and every time I have found help and support from people who have actually experienced it. Doing it for my husband who is never ill was something I never expected to do. Thank you therefore for the positive information, the fact that she had a Tia is important as it does alter the odds...

When I was working in Acutecare hospital and working cardiac unit it was a very common surgery and I don’t recall anytime where someone had any issues. Even open heart surgery is amazing at how well patients do.

Thank you, this came in just at the right time, we got the go ahead for the operation tomorrow at 3.30pm this afternoon

We are strangely calm.
