Music Haallucinations

When I was young, I used to hear music that wasn't playing. I looked this up and found this is something called Music Hallucination, but the issue is this is only in people who suffer from dementia and Alzheimer's. What could this be?

I had an aunty who was hard of hearing, suffered with tinnitus including musical tinnitus. She could hear fairground music. I think the BTA have an information leaflet on Musical Tinnitus which you may find helpful.

Hi, my wife suffers from this. She prefers the term musical tinnitus as the word hallucinations seem to infer a psychiatric condition which it is not. It is also called musical ear syndrome.

Although it is quite a rare form of tinnitus there are many sufferers most of whom definitely do not have Alzheimer’s or dementia.

As with most forms of tinnitus there is no known cure and management of the condition thus far seems to revolve around the same techniques used for tinnitus generally.

My wife uses Amitriptyline to help with sleep problems and completed an 8 session mindfulness course through the NHS at the end of last year. This has proved helpful in coping with the condition and the associated anxiety symptoms and allowing her to take control of her life again.

That said, she still has some bad times when the ‘music’ ramps up and makes life very difficult for her.

Hope this helps.
