I quit teaching due to hyperacusis. The classroom was the only place that used to keep me going in that job. So I finished last week and started doing a couple of days at my new job this week. Day two in the office and I managed all day with no hearing protection.Its a small quiet office with only a handful of staff and the radio playing in the background and only low-level chatting on the phone.
Got plenty keeping me busy and distracted, from others on the phone and my tinnitus.
I hope the new work environment really gives you some peace and feels like progress.

Dave, I’ve been following you for a few years now. It’s sad that you had finally to give up your career and I do hope that things go well for you. And for your family,
On the contrary, I've gone back to my previous career. It seems we become accustomed to a combination of stress from Tinnitus (and/or Hyperacusis) and work stress.
My workload will increase and, as the only one with the level of skills, I have a lot more responsibility.
I left a great team, but the folk at the new job are brill. The environment and team around you count for a lot. So best of both worlds now.

I'm pleased you have an improvement to your life. I remember reading an account of noise in the workplace at the then Great Western Railway site in Swindon. The intensity of the noise in some of the shops was so intense that communication was only possible by sign language and lip reading. You could progress to chargehand then foreman only with proficiency in both. It's knowing that life could be much much worse that keeps me going, I'm sure...
There is indeed always someone worse off. Much of my hearing problems are a result of perforated eardrums from grommets as a child. I do not blame that at all. Apart from there being not telling whether the operation was necessary or not, I enjoyed my youth in rave and moshpits alike. I had a career in the army. We do have to accept it in our own way.
Hi Dave, wishing you all the very best in your you career, I’m new on this site and finding it very interesting reading up on tinnitus, and learning myself why maybe Ive became very unsociable as I can no longer cope in groups or noisy places, I literally have panic attacks 😢 now I’m understanding why. Keeping busy and focusing on something you can get lost in us a huge help. Though at the same time fighting it is not the way.
