Loud music and teeth loss

Hi everyone

I am reading a lot of stories on here and thought about sharing mine without being too lengthy. Hope it could be of help.

A musician from over 35 years (I am 44 now). Been listening to extremely loud music in my headphones, on stage, in studio, including playing loud drums and cymbals, yet not had tinnitus for a very long time regardless.

Around 2015 I lost two of my teeth, respectively lower molars (number 6, left and right). Basically the ones we use to chew. Imagine non having anything to rest on, in the most crucial part of your mouth, where extreme forces are released at any time of the day, when we eat and when we rest our jaw against our maxilla.

Well, a few months after both my teeth were gone, tinnitus started and has since.

Kinda got used to it...some days are better some are worse, but mainly when it is silent around me, and even then I kind of ignore it.

I have notices it gets louder if I try to tense my jaw, hence I assume muscle tension is the reason. Got 2 implants fitted in my bone last January and getting the teeth fitted into them in a few months.

Hi there,

I suspect that my somatic tinnitus is also caused by dental/ jaw issues. I had a lot of deep dental work prior to the onset.

Can I ask what the sound is like and how you can manipulate it?

Regards

SS

Hello. The sound is a high pitch between 17 to 19khz so pretty high in the spectrum.

It is equal in frequency and volume on either side.

Manipulate it in what way you mean?

Sounds like mine. Manipulate with jaw movements or pressure with fingers behind the jaw. I can make it quieter or alter the pitch. Like you, I put it down to muscle tension at first and tried Botox which failed. However, I am now beginning to think it was the deep Dental work I had done for years ago…

Gotta be careful with Botox as that can cause serious damage to the nerves. I can't change its pitch. Only its volume, and that is not by touching it with my fingers but merely tensing my jaw muscles by bringing the jaw ahead like if I had an inverted overbite...if that makes sense.

Not exactly the same then, but there are some commonalities. I can change the sound and the intensity by moving my jaw backwards and forwards left and right. If I stretch it open for a few seconds, it will quieten down for a short while but then just return to normal. Can I ask you if you have had any dental work around the time of onset? I am beginning to wonder if this is the cause of my Tinnitus.

Hi, yes, in fact I do mention that in my very first post. All started after 2 extractions.
